E-town Football Charges Past McCaskey

If a win is better than a loss, then a lopsided win would be better than a regular victory. If evidence is needed, Elizabethtown's 39-15 drubbing of McCaskey on September 17th should suffice. The Bears more than doubled their point total from the previous three games combined and did so while racking up 488 yards of offense and holding the Tornado to seven first downs. A 24-point victory resulted, and evened E-town's record to 2-2 on the year.

Josh Rudy and Braden Cummings led the air attack while Logan Lentz and Hayden Haver powered the ground game. Rudy finished with 220 yards and three scores through the air with Cummings (150 yards) on the receiving end of all three TDs. Haver found the endzone twice and Lentz once, but it was Cade Cappello posting a team high 65 yards.

BOYS' SOCCER

The boys' soccer team shook off a three-game slide with a 3-0-1 run, jumping their overall record to 4-3-1. The Bears rode a stingy defense through that four-game stretch, outscoring their four foes by a combined 8-0, starting with a 2-0 win over Manheim Central on the 16th. Jason Stark and Xavier Giron netted first half scores with Dominic Santana tallying two saves to secure the shutout.

Elizabethtown hosted Hershey on Saturday the 18th with the game ending in a 0-0 deadlock despite 100 minutes of action. Santana finished with three saves.

The senior keeper extended his shutout streak to three games with four saves in a 5-0 victory over Cedar Cliff on the 20th. Hayden Flory earned two second half scores combined with an assist on Mitchell Garber's first half score. Wyatt Rachel made it 2-0 at intermission while Stark finished the scoring by splitting Flory's two scores with one of his own.

E-town needed overtime to slip by McCaskey, 1-0, one day later. Flory picked up another assist, this time setting up Carlton Wise for the game winner just minutes into overtime. Santana needed six saves to pick up his fourth shutout of the season.

GIRLS' SOCCER

The Lady Bear soccer club also snapped a losing streak, topping McCaskey 6-0 on the 21st, to rest at 2-6 on the year. Lily Heistand and Jena Witters led the way with Keegan Miller recording one save to earn the win. Witters paired two second half goals with two assists to Heistand who finished with three goals total. Olivia Shenk picked up the final score.

One day prior the Lady Bears fell in overtime to Cedar Cliff, 3-2. Witters and Heistand scored in the first half, but the Lady Colts scored twice in the second half before sealing the win in overtime. Miller had four saves.

Elizabethtown dropped their second straight non-league affair, falling to Hershey 2-1 on the 18th. This time Heistand fed Witters for the second half score that forced overtime, but the Lady Bears were unable to finish the comeback. Miller racked up nine saves in the loss.

On September 16th E-town dropped another non-league tilt, this one by a 5-1 final to Mechanicsburg. Miller finished with four saves while Shenk handled the scoring with help from Taryn Hummer.

GOLF

The golf team slipped in their final two regular season matches going a combined 7-3 to finish the season a tidy 22-7 good for second place in Section Two. Aiden Blyler carded the top round on both days, posting an 86 at Foxchase on the 15th and an 89 at Tanglewood on the 21st.

TENNIS

All they do is win could be the slogan for the 2021 girls' tennis team. The Lady Bears sit at 9-0 after knocking off Garden Spot and Cocalico to remain one of three undefeated L-L teams. The September 15th win over Spot and the September 20th victory over Cocalico both came via 7-0 finals with E-town surrendering a mere 23 combined points.

The bulk of that damage came against Cocalico with the Lady Eagles picking up 17 total points. E-town had a much easier time dispatching Garden Spot, posting three different shutouts on their way to the sweep. Alli Evans earned two of those shutouts, winning her singles match 6-0, 6-0 and teaming with Rylee Bender for an 8-0 doubles win.

VOLLEYBALL

The girls' volleyball team remained unbeaten with a win over Lebanon combined with a run to the title at the Black Knight Invitation on the 18th. That title run included pool play wins over Twin Valley, Boyertown and Cumberland Valley as well as a semifinal win over Hatboro-Horsham and the title clinching victory over the host Lady Knights.

The Lady Bears made quick work of Lebanon on the 16th, posting a 3-0 sweep with wins of 25-9, 25-16 and 25-15. Sydney Stewart and Kallee Locker split 16 kills with Angela Costa-Ouimet tallying 13 assists.

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team experienced the full gamut of results over the last week, topping Manheim Central, losing to Ephrata and Lampeter-Strasburg and finishing with a 1-1 tie opposite Cocalico, leaving the Lady Bears 3-5-2 overall.

Elizabethtown needed overtime and 17 Alaina Telenko saves to slip by Central on the 17th. Mikaela Condran and Regan Flory handled the offense with Flory picking up the game winner late in the extra frame.

E-town suffered setbacks on either side of that victory, falling to Lampeter-Strasburg by a 4-0 final on the 15th and to Ephrata by a 1-0 final on the 20th. Telenko tallied another 17 saves against L-S with eight more against the Mount. Four more Telenko saves combined with a fourth quarter strike from Lyla Fair gave the Lady Bears their second tie of the year, this one to Cocalico on the 21st.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Elizabethtown cross country team hosted Solanco on the 21st where the Lady Bears came out on top 23-38, but the boy's fell 24-33. Jordan DiRisio finished second for the girls while Nathan Johnson had the top boy's finish with his fourth place run.

On September 18th, the Bears took part in the Ben Bloser Bulldog Invitational at Big Spring HS. The Lady Bears finished ninth behind DiRisio's 20th place run while the boy's claimed 23rd in the team standings with Johnson posting the lone top-100 finish with his 79th place run.
