Pioneer Swimmers Top Manheim Central, CV

Winning all 11 events Thursday, January 27, the Lady Pioneer swimmers topped Manheim Central 108-58. The boys added an 89-49 result, having won just six events.

"This was an opportunity to put swimmers in events that they may not typically swim," said head coach Kylie Turner. "Our largest PR was 30 seconds in the 500 free by Claire Eckert. But the most exciting thing was a showdown between brothers Christian Rota and Matthew Rota in the 100 free," she continued. "Matthew kicked it in at the end for the close win.

"Each meet we compete in we preach, swim like it's your last race," she added.

Andrew Reidenbaugh, C. Rota and Ryan Smucker each won two events and competed in the relays to lead the way. Reidenbaugh took the 100 fly and 200 IM and anchored the 200-medley relay (M. Rota, Kyle Spaulding, Smecker) and the 200 free relay (M. Rota, Smecker, Cooper Honert). The Rota brothers, along with Honert and Spaulding won the 400 free. Smecker was tops in the 50 free and 100 back while C. Rota commanded the 200 free and 100 breaststroke.

Other winners included Honert in the 500 free and M. Rota in the 100 free.

Kara Scranton led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 500 free with Ashley Prouse and Claire Eckert and Zara Paisley led a 1-2 finish in the 100 fly with Tori Smith and the 200 free with Scranton. They also had three 400 free relays place with Paisley, Kylie Gerhardt, Eckert and Abby Welchans, who also doubled with wins in the 200 IM and the 100 free.

Last Tuesday the teams swept again, with the boys holding off CV 75-73 and the girls' dominating, 124-41.

The boys won 7 of 11 events to capture their third win of the season. Smecker won the 200 free and 100 back and joined C. Rota, Spaulding and Reidenbaugh for a 200-medley win. C. Rota, Honert, Spaulding and Reidenbaugh took the 200 free and Spaulding added top finishes in the 100 IM and 500 free. M. Rota won the butterfly.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

The girls' basketball team is quietly making noise in Section Three. Easy wins over Solanco and Lancaster Mennonite improved their winning streak to four straight. They sit on top of the standings at 8-2 with Manheim Central.

Thursday, Jan. 27 they defeated a one-win Solanco squad 47-34.

"We were 9-for-19 at the free throw line," pointed out head coach Tony Fink.

Up 15-6 in the first quarter, L-S pushed out to a 30-14 lead at the break and maintained that advantage throughout despite Solanco winning the second half 20-17.

Maggie Visniski, the only double-digit scorer, led a balanced attack with 10 points.

One night later the Pioneers made the short trip to Lancaster Mennonite. L-S took charge early, exploding for a 22-2 first quarter lead en route to a commanding 56-24 victory.

"They just could not handle our press," said Fink.

"Sharing the ball has been a key to our success," he added. "We have a short bench, but our five starters are prepared for 32 minutes if need be. Kelsey McTaggart has been solid off the bench."

Hostetter (13) and Daveler (12) were the top scorers.

A slow start last Tuesday led to a 39-23 defeat at Ephrata. The Mounts ran out to a 19-4 first quarter, led 28-6 at the half and survived Lampeter's 17-11 second half rally.

BOWLING

Last Monday, with four players rolling at least one 200-plus game, the Pioneers blanked Elco 7-0. Katie Pope's 236 was the high game of the day and sparked her first-ever 600 series. Ethan Snyder (545), Gehrig Harsh (543) and Nick Bukowski (541) packed it in after that with Peter MeCouch adding a 463.

"Our total pin count (2692) was 213 pins better than our previous team high," noted head coach John Achille.

At Palmyra Bowling Lanes Thursday, January 27, the Pioneer bowlers rolled their highest game of the season, a 972 in the third set against N. Lebanon but the Vikings prevailed 4-3.

The hosts won the first two games to seal Lampeter's fate.

With a 601 series and a 236 in the third set, Bukowski led the way. Gehrigh Harsh rolled a 515 while Snyder was two pins back. Pope chipped in with a 449 series and MeCouch hit 401.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

The boys' basketball team hit 80 points or more for the third time this year and added their second highest scoring quarter, netting 32, in a lopsided 85-27 victory over a short-handed Solanco squad Thursday, January 27.

L-S put up 20 points in the first quarter, held Solanco to five, and poured in 32 in the second for a commanding 52-16 lead at the break.

"Owen Filson, filling in for Ty Burton, got his first start of the year and finished with a career best 12 points," noted head coach Ed Berryman. "And Chase Smucker added a career-high nine coming off the bench."

All five starters hit double figures with Ben Wert (17), Berkeley Wagner (15), and Luka Vranich (12) joining Filson.

At Elizabethtown on Saturday, the Pioneers found the going a bit tougher but still prevailed, 55-42, using a strong second half to pull away. Up 18-11 in the first quarter, L-S managed just two points in the second for a slim 20-19 lead at the break.

"The past two weeks Luke Hines and Tim Holmes have been doing a nice job covering the big kids," he continued. "They combined for nine points and seven rebounds and held the 6'9" Matt Gilhool to 15."

At home last Tuesday, Wert scored the first eight points of the game, hit a three at the buzzer and L-S was off and running, again. Fueled by a 23-4 third quarter, they dominated Ephrata 73-37. Wert poured in 25, and Parido hit a dozen to lead the scoring.
