Knights Top Comets After Loss to Wilson

The Hempfield girls' lacrosse team opened the season with a non-league match with the Wilson Bulldogs on Saturday morning, March 26.

Leading by only one goal at halftime, the Bulldogs outscored the home team 7-4 in the second half to finish on top, 13-9.

Jenna Facciolli led Wilson with four goals.

Isabelle Masengarb registered a hat trick for the Black Knights while Brynne Axe and Whitney Hershey each tallied two goals. Kenna Price and Mia Brennan each scored once.

Eryn Murphy faced 20 shots in front of the Hempfield goal, saving seven.

The Black Knights improved to 1-1, defeating Lancaster-Lebanon League foe Penn Manor on Tuesday, March 29, by a decisive margin of 19-2.

Goals and assists came from eight different players, including Masengarb (6g, 1a), Kelsea Dague (5g, 1a), Hershey (2g, 2a) and Axe (2g, 3a), Natalie Bole (2g), Hattie Mack (1g), and Grace Forry (1g), Makenzie Warfel (1a) and Claire Skovera (1a).

BOYS' LACROSSE

With a seven-goal performance by Max Grube, the boys' lacrosse team dominated Penn Manor 18-7 in an L-L League match on Tuesday at home. Toby Marco chipped in with a hat trick.

With a 5-2 lead heading into the second quarter, the Knights tacked on six more goals for an 11-4 halftime advantage.

Ryan Heuston and A.J. McAlpine each scored twice while David Gross, Jason Hilton, and Zack Antesberger each netted one goal.

Returning goalie Matt Wiest grabbed 16 saves in the win. Gabe Colon-Munoz had eight saves.

The Knights were coming off a 9-7 non-league victory at Avon Grove on Saturday, March 26 with Wiest grabbing 21 saves.

Leading the team with a hat trick was Grube while Hilton and Marco each found the Avon Grove net twice.

McAlpine and Heuston each had a goal and an assist. Antesberger assisted on two goals.

BASEBALL

It was feast or famine for the Hempfield bats in the first three games of the 2022 season. The Knights came out and collected 11 runs on 11 hits in the season-opening, non-league 11-0 victory at Lower Dauphin on Friday, March 25.

Hempfield plated three runs in the first inning on RBI hits by Gavin Constein, Josh Toole and Chuck Sheerer. They Knights added five more in the sixth, sending 11 batters to the plate.

Southpaw senior Austin Dunlap was the beneficiary of the offensive support. He went six innings, striking out eight and not allowing a walk to earn the win.

Hempfield fell to Governor Mifflin on Tuesday, March 29. The Mustangs galloped around the bases, beating the Knights 21-3 as Hempfield's defense allowed 13 unearned runs overall.

Logan Harrelson actually didn't allow a run for the first three innings.

Penn Manor topped Hempfield in a Section One game on Wednesday, March 30 at Millersville University by a 5-0 score.

Dunlap fanned six and walked one. Four runners left in scoring position in the early going hurt Hempfield's chances. Manor starter Hunter Sipel pitched out of trouble as he struck out nine batters. He also tripled to drive in a run.

TRACK

The Hempfield boys' and girls' track teams opened the season with a win. The girls topped Penn Manor 91-59 at home on Tuesday, March 29 while the boys dominated the Comets 102-47.

The boys swept the relay events, with Chris Titter taking part in both the 4 x 400 and 4 x 800-meter wins. Dale Winland, Diellon Trinaku, Sam Freedman, Aidan Hodge and Carson Lieberman contributed to those relay wins.

Hodge went on to win the 800 and 1,600-meter events. Sawyer Barmore's 200-m dash and Logan Muhlberg's 400 victory also helped Hempfield as did Tate Martin's sweep of the hurdle events.

Hempfield also took four field events with Tate Martin's triple jump, Braydon Felsinger's long jump effort, Peter Wenzel's javelin toss and Vince Wisotzky's javelin heave.

The girls' victory included Mia Sheldon's first-place finishes in the 100 and the high hurdles. Georrgia Kielmeyer won the 300 hurdles.

Paige Harrington claimed the 800 while Kylie Ridilla and Audra Koerner-Smith won the 400 and 200, respectively.

In field events, it was Faith Landis claiming the pole vault and freshman Sydney Rhoads taking the high jump.

BOYS' TENNIS

Hempfield improved to 5-0 on the 2022 tennis campaign, blanking all of its opponents along the way. On Friday, March 25, the Knights topped West York 5-0 on the road and defeated Reading by the same score the following day at home.

One of the five wins against West York was via forfeit. Eric Jordan and Cooper Lehman won their respective singles matches while Eli Worley teamed up with Jonah Comeaux for a 6-3, 6-2 doubles win and Trent Meyers paired up with Tom Gross for a 6-1, 6-2 victory at first doubles.

The Gross and Meyers combination posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory in the Reading match - the same scores as Worley and Comeaux.

Lehman won 6-1, 6-1 at number one singles followed by Jordan's 6-0, 6-0 win and Andre Hurst's 6-0, 6-0 shutout.

In Tuesday's match at Penn Manor, the Knights posted a 7-0 victory. Jordan and Lehman teamed up to win an easy first doubles, 8-0. Hurst and Meyers were 8-1 winners at number two doubles - the same winning score for Worley and Comeaux.

Lehman (6-0, 6-1), Jordan (6-3, 6-4) Hurst (6-0, 6-1) and Meyers (6-1, 6-1) swept the single matches in straight sets.

BOYS' VOLLEYBALL

In a battle between L-L League rivals, Hempfield topped Manheim Township 3-0 in boys' volleyball action Tuesday night at Landisville.

The Knights (1-0) posted winning sets of 25-7, 25-15 and 25-9 as Dante Keener served up four aces and poured in 10 kills.

Also leading the Knights were Michael Keene and Caden Bonner with six digs each. Bonner added a match-leading 28 assists. Ethan Earhart registered two blocks.

SOFTBALL

Courtney Guthrie got the start in Hempfield's season opener at home against Section One foe Penn Manor on Wednesday, March 30. Guthrie pitched scoreless softball into the fourth inning when the Comets plated a pair of runs en route to a 6-1 victory.

Sophomore Carley Ernst relieved Guthrie in the fifth inning. Both Guthrie and Ernst struck out five Comet batters and allowed only two walks.
