Garden Spot Track Teams Battle Manheim Central

The Garden Spot boys' track team has had a number of consistent performers. At home on Tuesday, April 19, two of these pictures of consistency helped the Spartans battle Manheim Central in a very closely fought battle. The Barons prevailed 68-64 as Garden Spot fell to 2-2 on the year.

Finn Wenrich won the 200- and 400-meter races. Alan Krock did what was asked of him. He not only ran the 800, 1600 and the 3200, he claimed first in each of these events.

Gavin Lee Miller took first in the triple jump with a 40-foot-7 measurement.

The Garden Spot girls also came up short as Central won the Section Two meet 86-46. Melanie Esh won the 3,200 and Bryna Kelly took the high hurdles.

Garden Spot fell to 2-2 on the year.

SOFTBALL

It was the old feast or famine situation for the Spartans as they pounded Annville-Cleona on Tuesday, in a game that had been originally scheduled for Monday April 18, and they lost to Twin Valley the next afternoon.

The Spartans were already coming off a 16-3 victory the previous week at Lancaster Mennonite when they downed A-C 17-5. The win improved the team's mark to 3-6 on the year.

"We played very well," said head coach Kimberly King. "It was an all-around team effort."

Weather conditions were not ideal as the players dealt with strong winds as well as some precipitation.

"Once the winds slowed down a bit, we played better defense," King quipped. "We also hit the ball and Kylie Weinhold pitched a good game."

The sophomore starter also helped her own cause, with two singles and three RBIs.

Fellow sophomore Makayla Barr drove in two runs.

"She had her first varsity hit, and it was a double," King said. "She also had a single"

Sydni King had a single, a double and two RBI's. The big bat of the afternoon was Amanda Hoover, the designated player who drove in four runs.

"Amanda had a double and a single," King noted. "We've been working with her at the plate, and she has been hitting the ball hard."

The Spartans had 10 hits on the day, but also took advantage of three Annville errors

"We also drew a bunch of walks," King said.

One such batter in the lineup was Lindsay Lapp. The senior walked three times and scored all three times.

In the 11-0 loss to Twin Valley - a non-league game at New Holland - the Spartans managed only one hit.

"They were pretty much hitting it where we weren't," King explained. "They scored four times in the first inning. We kind of changed our thought and started pitching them inside. We were also making plays. They did not score over the next three innings."

The Raiders scored four more in the fifth and padded the lead thereafter.

"We made a couple of errors in the fifth inning, which hurt us," King said.

BASEBALL

The baseball team also came up with 10 hits, facing Governor Mifflin in a non-league road game on Thursday, April 14. The Mustangs held off a Garden Spot comeback and eked out a 9-7 win.

As the top of the lineup goes, so do the Spartans. This game was no exception as George Rohrbaugh went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and one batted in. Caleb Zimmerman went 2-for-4 with a run.

Caiden Murphy had two singles and two RBIs. He also stole a base.

Joel Martin, Luke Steiner, and Colin Smith each drove in a run.

The Barons (4-2) opened with a 25-11 win but saw the Spartans make it a tight second set before the visitors managed a 26-24 win. Central wrapped it up with a 25-15 win.
