Buckskins Triumph Over Lebanon, 8-2

A win is a win, even if it comes well after the postseason door was slammed shut. Case in point, Conestoga Valley's 8-2 triumph over Lebanon on the 9th was their second win in their last 12 games but it still bumped CV to 7-11 on the season.

Owen Fisher was the beneficiary of the run support, even helping his own cause with one RBI, on his way to the win. Fisher went all seven innings and allowed two hits and two runs to go with 11 strikeouts. Titus York and Evan Lapp joined Fisher in the one RBI club, but Sam Thompson led the team with two RBI. He kicked things off with a fielder's choice in the first and added a one run single that came as part of CV's five-run fourth.

A few days prior the Buckskins traveled to Ephrata for a tangle with the first place Mountaineers. The result was a 10-0 loss with Connor Esbenshade taking the hit. He allowed six runs on four hits and four walks before giving way to Preston Fisher and Tucker Hastings. That pair covered the last two-plus innings, and the last four Ephrata runs.

SOFTBALL

The softball team posted the same 1-1 mark with a loss opposite Ephrata and a win over Lebanon. That also put the Lady Buckskins at 7-11 on the year with the postseason a long shot.

Conestoga Valley needed just three innings to dispatch Lebanon on the 9th, using a 10-run third to finish off a 16-0 final. Rhiannon Henry was the star, picking up the win for her work in the circle while also belting out three hits and collecting three RBI. Her big bop was a two-run triple in the second with a third inning single capping her RBI collection. Henry the pitcher allowed just two hits to go with nine punch-outs.

May 5th brought Ephrata to town with the Lady Mountaineers posting a 10-3 win. Henry took the loss despite 13 strikeouts thanks to seven CV errors leading to nine unearned runs. Henry also picked up two hits and two RBI for her work at the plate. Alexa Freeburn added a seventh inning RBI to finish the scoring.

VOLLEYBALL

As the sun sets on the boys' volleyball season it appears like the Buckskins will fall short of the postseason. CV sits at 7-8 overall or a few spots outside the District 3-3A field while their 6-5 Section One mark has them in third, also outside the L-L playoff field.

Conestoga Valley did pick up a 3-1 win over fourth place Cedar Crest on May 5th with a 25-19 setback in game three keeping the 'Bucks from a sweep. CV opened with wins of 25-19 and 25-21 before the Falcons stole game three. CV rebounded with a 25-23 match clinching win in game four. Kenji Pha posted a 36 assists night while Jayden Rice added one block to his 17 kills. Camden Clapper matched that one block with Carson Hoover posting a team high two aces. Kyle Hutchison chipped in with 10 digs.

A few days later CV was unable to keep pace with Warwick, falling 3-0, behind losses of 25-19, 25-22, 25-22. Hoover led the way with 12 kills and 12 digs. Clapper added three blocks and Rice one ace.

BOYS' LACROSSE

In the world of sports heartbreak comes in many forms. For the boy's lacrosse team, a four-game stretch in late April was one form that led to another. Despite finishing the regular season with a win over Lancaster Country Day, that four game stretch, all losses, pushed the Buckskins just outside the District 3-3A field.

That leaves the 8-6 win over LCD on the 5th as CV's final game of 2022. Ben Nolt turned away 15 shots that included a fourth quarter shutout, allowing the Buckskins to flip a 6-5 deficit into the two-goal win. Hunter Silvaggio netted a hat-trick while Jeff Fisher and Keller Dillman chipped in with two scores each. Isaiah Sensenig collected the final score.

GIRLS' LACROSSE

The girl's lacrosse team also finished their 2022 campaign, finishing 2-14 overall after losses to Cedar Cliff, Lancaster Country Day, and Central York.

CV dropped their May 4th game against Cedar Cliff by a 16-6 final. Sophia Hess accounted for half of the scoring with Annika Bredeman, Cassandra Malles and Alaina Culbert splitting the remaining three goals. Jamie Handwerger stopped six shots in the loss.

Offense remained elusive one day later in an 8-3 loss to LCD. This time 13 Handwerger saves were not enough as CV had just one goal each from Bredeman, Culbert and Bella Miller.

Conestoga Valley was able to find their offense on the 9th but was unable to stop Central York, falling by a 15-13 final. The Lady Buckskins pushed for a second half comeback but the 10-4 first half hole was too much to overcome. Danae Ulrich stepped to the forefront with four scores while Jordyn Hironimus added three. Malles and Culbert each netted two scores while Caroline Kulp and Mikyla Rineer split the remaining two. Handwerger finished with eight saves.

TRACK

The track teams had their final post-season tune-up on May 9th, battling Hempfield in the regular season finale. The Lady Buckskins enjoyed a 91-58 win while the boy's dropped a narrow one, 80-70.

Christiana Uzoije and Isabella Johnson both collected two wins while CV swept all three relay races. Johnson claimed the 100m and 200m while Uzoije did the same in the shot put and discus. Johnson also took part in the 400m and 1600m relays as did Alondra Ortiz. Hallie Schnapf and Mae Lindor completed the 400m relay while Grace Lapp and Kylynn Frankford did the same for the 1600m relay.

Frankford also took part in the 3200m relay win while adding a solo 800m victory. Sage Haldeman, Bella Alston, and Meagan Kime finished the 3200m relay. Lapp added a 300H win to her relay work while Jessica Koenig finished the hurdle sweep with a win in the 100H. Brooke Denlinger (400m) and Seana Dougherty (3200m) picked up the final two wins.

On the boy's side, Nick Tran was the lone multiple event winner, taking the 100m and 200m. Zach Phy went solo for a 300H win while joining Carson Miller, Joey Castronova and Emmanuel Gitonga for a 1600m relay win. Ben Eberly took the 110H for a hurdle sweep while Timothy Gitonga posted the final win on the track in the 3200m.

CV posted three wins in the field with Thomas Ripson (shot put), Aidan Zimmerman (discus) and Cameron Swinton (triple jump) collecting those wins.
