Knights Post Comeback Win over York, 35-52
Hempfield trailed York 26-20 heading into the fourth quarter of the non-league football game on Friday night, September 2.
That was when quarterback Jackson Landis put together two scoring drives, utilizing running back Grant Hoover for some of those yards. The Black Knights took a 27-26 lead on a one-yard quarterback sneak and a Cannon Biscoe extra point kick.
The second drive Landis and the offense needed to execute came later in the fourth when York had regained the lead 32-27 on a huge 77-yard touchdown pass from Sam Stoner to Jahiem White.
Landis connected with Micah Gates on a 29-yard touchdown pass. Hoover, whose night had already included 163 rushing yards on 23 carries to go with five receptions for 44 yards, scored on the two-point conversion to give the Knights a three-point edge.
The Knights (2-0) held on for the 35-32 victory.
"Grant Hoover is key to our offense," head coach George Eager said. "His ability to run and catch makes him a dangerous player for us."
Landis, who completed 12-of-18 pass attempts for 173 yards, compiled 54 rushing yards on 18 carries, including a first-quarter touchdown. It gave Hempfield a 6-0 lead heading into the second stanza.
It was only a one-point game at 13-12 thanks partly to David Warde's 97-yard interception return for York. Warde would also score on a 15-yard TD pass from Stoner in the second half.
Landis also connected with Andy Garcia four times for a total of 51 yards. Micah Gates caught two passes for 65 yards, including the late TD.
Asked about the valiant effort of the offensive line on a high voltage scoring night like this, Eager commented, "Our offensive line has been tremendous thus far. Our starters are Deyvid Palepale, Mike Shaffer, Quentin Sneed, Sean Tollet and Peter Wenzel.
"David and Mike anchor the line as returning starters and leaders up front," Eager continued. "The other three have earned the right to be on the field and it's showing with their play."
