Club To Host Picnic For Prospective Members

The Strasburg Area Sertoma Club will host a picnic on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 6:30 p.m. for those who want to learn more about the club's mission and service projects. The picnic will be held at the pavilion at Strasburg Community Park, 151 Precision Ave., Strasburg.

Sertoma stands for "Service to Mankind." The Strasburg Area Sertoma Club is part of Sertoma Inc., which was founded in 1912 and has service clubs all over the United States and Canada. Most Sertoma Clubs focus on assisting the more than 50 million people with hearing health issues and educating the public on the issues surrounding hearing health.

The Strasburg Area Sertoma Club members have been instrumental in funding the development and maintenance of Strasburg Community Park for over 20 years. In addition, the club has organized and implemented the annual Memorial Day Parade and Service in Strasburg after the Paul R. Strubel Post 8710 Veterans of Foreign War closed. Other local charities, such as Santa's Helpers and veterans' causes, have benefited from the Sertoma Club's efforts to help the local community. Sertoma Club members reside in the Strasburg area, including the Pequea Valley, Conestoga Valley and Lampeter-Strasburg school districts.

The Sertoma Club holds monthly dinners throughout the year at restaurants or, in the warmer months, as picnics. Members may bring guests.

The club raises funds primarily through its footlong sub sales in December and February as well as assisting with directing visitor parking at the Day Out With Thomas events at the Strasburg Rail Road.

Those who wish to attend the Sept. 14 picnic are asked to contact Lynda Houck at 703-231-9037 or houckl@att.net.
