Church to mark 300th anniversary

Byerland Mennonite Church, 931 Byerland Church Road, Willow Street, will celebrate its 300th anniversary on Sunday, Oct. 6. In a service beginning at 9:30 a.m., the congregation will focus on its yearlong theme of "Faithful for Generations."

Speakers Melvin Reitz, Joe Garber, Joyce Zimmerman, Jeanne Bye, and Matt Buckwalter will give accounts of the church's past, present, and future vision. The service will include both congregational and special music, including songs that had significance to the congregation in various eras. A number of historical items, including original deeds, photos, and Communion items, will be on display in the church lobby. The original log church building still stands across the street from the current building and will be open for visitors. A carry-in meal will follow the service.

In Sunday morning services during the past several months, the planning committee has held various historical pop-up presentations. These activities included a wagon ride to the original site of the log church, talks about early congregational singing and a display of the singers' table, and a discussion of ministerial ordination by the lot as formerly practiced.
