A Mountville Tradition

Lions Club's Chicken Potpie Sale Will Be Held Oct. 18

It's a rite of fall.

The autumn version of the Mountville Lions Club's semiannual chicken potpie sale will be held Saturday, Oct. 18, beginning at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 100 W. Main St., Mountville.

The occasion is takeout only while supplies last, and the Lions Club will provide the containers. Homemade desserts will be for sale.

"One of our members makes a peanut butter chocolate cake that sells quickly," said Eric Weaver, the chairman of the club's potpie committee. "There's often an apple cinnamon cake. And then guys like me who can't cook, I go to BJ's and buy a nice pie there, so there will be some store-bought pies mixed in, but the majority of them are baked by our Lions."

Brooms made by local Amish craftspeople will be on sale.

The Lions Club holds potpie sales on the third Saturday each March and October. They are major fundraisers for the organization. "It supports a local organization that works in our community," said Weaver. "It's really good potpie. We've been doing it for over 50 years that we've been making it twice a year. And it's a good value for people."

Mountville Lions Club members typically use 460 pounds of chicken, 240 pounds of potatoes, 200 pounds of flour, and 60 dozen eggs. They cook the chicken and roll out the dough.

"Anything that we earn, profits from our events, goes back to the community," said Weaver. "Some of it goes back to Lions Club International to help out with disaster relief grants that our Lions Club International Group does, but a lot of it stays local."

The Mountville Lions Club annually awards a $1,000 scholarship to a boy and a girl graduating from Hempfield High School, teams with Dayspring Christian Academy for a food drive, and also supports the Mountville Fire Company. "We will join them this Halloween at the fire company, and we'll cook hot dogs and have some candy along with their open house there for the kids," said Weaver.

"We help at a lot of events," said Weaver. "There was recently a car show that the local police departments put together over off of Indian Run Road, and we helped park cars at that, a way that doesn't cost us anything, but we're helping the community and we're out and having some visibility. So we'll keep working on things like that."

The Mountville Lions are actively seeking people to join the group. "We are always looking for new members who would like to serve their community; we have great camaraderie while working to make our world a better place," said Weaver. Anyone interested can call Weaver at 717-368-2810 or ask any Lion.

The Mountville Lions Club meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 6:30 p.m. at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, 450 W. Main St., Mountville. "We have a good time," said Weaver.
