A "purrfect" ending

A week-old kitten that was found abandoned in the middle of the road is now healthy and happy and looking for her forever home thanks to the effort of a good Samaritan and Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue (LDAR).

According to LDAR volunteer Lisa Newton, who handles the cat and kitten rescue, Kyle Dunn of Kennett Square was driving to work on Strasburg Pike in Lancaster when he came upon the kitten.

"It is amazing because Kyle saw this clump of fur in the middle of the road. He just wanted to move it to the side of the road, but when he picked it up, he saw it was alive," said Newton, noting that Dunn was able to spot the kitten even though it was early morning and dark.

Dunn then took the kitten to a Lancaster shelter but was told that the rescue does not take in kittens under 2 pounds, so it provided him with some formula and a bottle. "They had no one to handle a bottle baby, but they gave him a bottle baby kitten kit," said Newton. "He kept the kitten on his desk and kept her warm and tried to give her formula."

At the end of his work day, Dunn drove the kitten to Newton's home in Chester County, which was a one-hour drive.

Newton took in the kitten, which had to be bottle fed every two to three hours around the clock. Dunn named her Mazzy, since he was listening to the band Mazzy Star when he first saw her in the road.

Today, Mazzy is in Newton's foster care but is hoping to soon find a permanent home. "She is 6 months old and eats kitten food," Newton said. "She likes to play with other cats, and she is great with people. My dog doesn't mind her at all. She is used to calm dogs."

Mazzy is just one of many cats and kittens available from LDAR, which was founded by Newton's sister, Mary Bauer, in 2018. LDAR is a no-kill, all-volunteer Chester County-based organization that rescues homeless, abused or unwanted animals and finds them permanent, loving homes. "We always have kittens for people to see," Newton added.
