A Ride Of Compassion

Inaugural Mike O'Neill Memorial Planned

Over the years that Tom and Carla O'Neill owned O'Neill's Auto Body, they held a number of motorcycle rides to raise funds for various local causes. Carla figures that the funds from those added together totaled more than $150,000. A ride for a local family held in the fall of 2020 attracted about 80 riders, and Carla reported that some past rides brought out as many as 200 riders.

Earlier in the spring, Tom and Carla were talking, and they noted that it had been five years since Tom's twin brother, Mike, had died suddenly. The couple decided to hold a new ride that would bear Mike's name, with the goal of making it an annual event. They chose two local households as beneficiaries and scheduled the inaugural Mike O'Neill Memorial Ride for Sunday, May 23. Those wishing to take part are asked to meet at 1390 Sheep Hill Road, East Earl, at 9 a.m. to register. A per-bike registration fee will be charged, with a nominal additional fee for a passenger. The ride will leave at 11:30 a.m. for a meal at T.J. Rockwell's in Elizabethtown. All funds will benefit the families of Rodney Shirk and Sharon Anderson.

Rodney, who is known as Shirky to his friends, grew up in New Holland and learned about the auto body business at an early age from his father. He worked for the O'Neills for many years. Rodney and his wife, Mary, live in Terre Hill. "(Rodney) was (recently) diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer," said Carla, who added that he is currently undergoing chemotherapy with radiation and surgery planned for his treatment. Carla noted that funds given to the Shirk family will help to cover bills while Rodney cannot work.

Sharon lost her husband on Thanksgiving Day 2020 after caring for him during his six-year battle with cancer and Parkinson's disease. "(Sharon's) father died a week later, so she had two big blows within a week," said Carla. Funds donated to Sharon will help her try to catch up with house maintenance and other bills.

In addition to the ride, prizes and giveaways donated by local businesses will be part of the event. Carla noted that the past rides have been good events and good for the community. "This is a way to continue that in memory of Mike," she said.
