A Sweet Party For A Great Cause

If you're looking for a fun and inexpensive way to spend Valentine's Day weekend, look no further than Cupid, Cupcakes & Coffee. The event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11, at Hellam Fire Company, 163 E. Market St., from 7 to 9 p.m. Proceeds will benefit York Youth Revolution (YYR), a community youth group based in Hellam, and Bartz Brigade, a York-based nonprofit that advocates for suicide awareness and prevention.

The festivities will include a dance, with music provided by the band Modern Age. "They play adult contemporary music, country and pop from the '70s to now," said Joe Bachman, youth leader of YYR. "They play songs you can slow dance to, and they play songs for fast dancing. They're a lot of fun."

Along with the band, the event will feature cupcakes, coffee and a variety of fun activities, Bachman said. "We'll have a photo booth for people to get their picture taken, and we're working it out that they'll be able to take the photo home that night," he commented. In past years, YYR has hosted the party preceded by a community dinner, but this year, the group members are focusing just on the party.

"This is our first year back doing this since the beginning of the pandemic, so we haven't had this event since 2020," Bachman noted. "We wanted to bring it back and it didn't work out to do the dinner this year, but we still wanted something to bring the community together."

Admission to the party is by freewill donation, and proceeds will support a mission trip YYR will take this summer.

"This year, we're fortunate to have Wrightsville Group Workcamp right here in our community," Bachman said. "We'll be participating in that. We currently have 250 campers from all over the United States who will be coming to this." Campers will complete repairs at local homes. "These are homes of people who are low-income or disabled or elderly, and they might need anything from painting to installing a handicap ramp," he noted.

New this year, proceeds from the party will also support Bartz Brigade, an organization Bachman learned about through one of YYR's leaders. "This is something that's very close to us, because the topic of suicide comes up at our meetings," Bachman said. "This is something that teenagers want to raise awareness about."

YYR has been participating in the workcamp for 14 years, traveling up and down the East Coast and as far away as Indiana and Wisconsin. "The workcamp is the pinnacle of what we do as a youth group," Bachman remarked. "Our mission is to serve others and get nothing in return, but in reality, we get more out of the residents we help than we could ever imagine. They are always smiling, always grateful for our help."

YYR is open to high school and college-age students. The group meets on Sundays from 6 to 8 p.m. at Faith United Methodist Church, 126 E. Market St., Hellam.
