A Taste of Mardi Gras in Mount Joy

It may be bitter cold outside, but Saint Luke Episcopal Church will soon bring in some Southern warmth.

The church, located at 209 S. Market St., Mount Joy, will host its annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on Tuesday, Feb. 17, from 4 to 7 p.m.

The dinner will feature all-you-can-eat pancakes, served with savory link sausages, a fresh fruit cup and beverages. Shrimp and grits will once again be an a la carte option, adding a Southern flair to the menu.

"This scrumptious tradition brings the community together for a hearty meal in celebration of Mardi Gras and the beginning of the Lenten season," shared Lynn McCleary, senior warden.

Shrove Tuesday, also known as Mardi Gras, marks the final day of Ordinary Time before the Christian season of Lent begins the next day, Ash Wednesday. Observed worldwide under various names - including Fastnacht in Germany and Sprengidagur in Iceland - the tradition often includes feasting and emptying the larders before the solemnity of Lent, a period of fasting and reflection leading up to Easter.

McCleary noted that in addition to enjoying the meal, guests will have the opportunity to take a tour of the historic church building.

"The Rev. Martha Harris will be available to offer private prayers for those seeking spiritual reflection," she added.

The Shrove Tuesday meal provides a way for members of Saint Luke to connect with the wider community, welcome visitors in and prepare for the Lenten season. In the past, upwards of 100 people have come for the meal, enjoying food and friendship together.

"Come hungry, bring friends and enjoy an evening of food, fellowship, fun and festivity," McCleary said.

Saint Luke's social hall and sanctuary are fully handicapped-accessible via an elevator, and on-street parking is available. Tickets for the supper may be reserved by calling or texting Nancy Kiser at 717-201-7728. The meal is available for dine-in or takeout.

Saint Luke's holds worship on Sundays at 11 a.m. Morning prayer is held on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. A Taize service, a meditative experience focused on spirituality, is held on the first Saturday of each month at 5 p.m. Sunday services are also streamed on YouTube.
