A tribute to veterans

At a ceremony marking Veterans Day in Manheim, Maria Apostolec read a tribute to those who have served, acknowledging that many who were gathered in the crowd would never fully understand the sacrifices made both in times of peace and war. "We see you. We recognize your humanity," read Apostolec, a member of the Manheim Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Cyrus R. Peters Memorial Post 5956 Auxiliary. "And we send you love that is gentle, patient and healing. With blessings and gratitude, we ask that you remember you are loved."

That was Craig Fisher's goal when organizing the event held on Nov. 11 at Manheim Veterans Memorial Park - to honor and thank all who have served our country.

"We want to be sure our veterans know how much we appreciate them," said the post commander.

The ceremony featured remarks by retired brigadier general George Schwartz; recognition of honored guests, including veterans from the Vietnam and Korean wars; a proclamation from Manheim Borough Mayor Scot Funk; and music, including taps.

"Veterans Day is more than just a date on the calendar," said Schwartz, who served as master of ceremonies for the event. "It is a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have worn the uniform of our armed forces."

Fisher provided the keynote address. "The history of our great nation is closely linked to the courage and dedication of our veterans," Fisher told the crowd. "From the birth of our Republic to the present day, generations of Americans have answered the call to serve, placing the needs of our country above their own. They have fought on foreign shores, patrolled distant seas and soared through hostile skies, all to preserve the liberties we hold dear."

He emphasized that veterans also need support after returning home from service.

"As we express our gratitude, we must also recognize that many of our veterans face significant challenges," he shared. "Post-traumatic stress, physical disabilities, unemployment and homelessness affect far too many who've served. ... Let's renew our commitment to supporting our veterans in deed as well as in word."

Fisher paid tribute to veterans from all eras of the nation's history, noting, "The story of America is closely tied to the story of our veterans."

He encouraged people to find concrete ways to offer support and thanks to veterans. "Saying 'thank you for your service' once a year isn't enough," Fisher said. "We must strive to be worthy of the freedoms you've protected, to be engaged citizens. ... Let's make sure no veteran feels forgotten or left behind. We can all play a part in showing our gratitude, whether it's through volunteering at VA hospitals, supporting veteran-owned businesses or simply taking the time to listen to a veteran's story."
