A display of trucks and Jeeps, live music, food and an opportunity to win prizes will be featured at a Country Jamboree being presented on Saturday, Aug. 15, from noon to 6 p.m. at Col. Jacob Morgan American Legion Post 537, 4499 N. Twin Valley Road, Morgantown.

This year's event will be the third annual jamboree. The jamboree is an extension of the immensely popular annual motorcycle shows presented by the American Legion Riders.

"Me and one other guy who was a commander at the time thought we needed something else to fill the summer up and raise more money for the post to be able to take care of itself, if you will," said Ron Harner, commander of Post 537.

The addition has been a success. Last year, the post had over 30 vehicles come out for the jamboree, primarily Jeeps of all eras.

Admission for spectators is free, but Jeep and truck owners will be asked to pay a registration fee. Trophies will be awarded in several categories, including best Jeep, Ford, GM, Ram and import. There will also be a commander's choice, people's choice and kids' choice award, as well as an honor for the owner of the vehicle who drove the furthest to get to the show.

The awards are sponsored in part by local businesses and individuals.

"Usually, we'll have a jar for kids to put numbers in," Harner said of the kids' choice award. "All the vehicles have a tag on them with their registration number, and the kids can just write on a piece of paper and put it in a jar ... same with the people's choice award."

Another highlight of the day will be live music featuring Johnny Cash Barnett, a Johnny Cash tribute act that also covers songs by Merle Haggard, George Jones, Hank Sr., Hank Jr., David Allen Coe, Waylon Jennings, Conway Twitty, Willie Nelson, Alan Jackson, Elvis Presley and more.

Food offered for sale during the day will be provided by Joanna Store's food truck. Beverages, both alcoholic and nonalcoholic, will be served as well.

There will also be a Chinese-style auction with gifts donated by Post 537 members.

"They're just random items, could be artwork, tools. NAPA normally gives a bucket with vehicle cleaning supplies in it," Harner said. "Then you buy a block of tickets, and then each prize will have a bag in front of it."

Information will be available for people interested in becoming a member of the American Legion. The American Legion is a veterans' organization, but social memberships are available to others. The post also includes the Sons of the American Legion, which is for members whose parents served in the U.S. military; the ladies auxiliary; and the American Legion Riders motorcycle group.

"If you're a vet or son or daughter of a vet, and you're not a member, we'd like to have you stop by and check us out," Harner said.
