An emphasis on prevention

Although Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) includes the word "rescue" in its name, not everyone might associate the volunteer company with all the types of rescues members are qualified to performed and the types of fires they can fight.

Water rescue, which Chief Darryl Keiser pointed out is mostly used in flood waters, is deployed when necessary with boats set up specifically to navigate in waters filled with logs and debris.

"For industry (rescue), we have a lot of equipment and a focus on confined space rescue," noted Keiser.

"Beyond standard tools, we have the ability to cut through stone and metal, added former GSFR chief of staff Nick Good. "We have the saws for anything we should need to get through within reason."

In addition, GSFR offers a full wild land crew to fight vegetation and wood fires. "They know how to dig to mitigate and manage that kind of fire," said Good.

However, rather than deploy those apparatus, fire station personnel would prefer to emphasize prevention.

GSFR member John Fisher handles the fire prevention program. "(Fisher) visits schools especially during Fire Prevention Month," said Keiser.

"If there's something you need (to know about fire prevention), either we can provide it or work with someone to get it to you," added Good. "If we can plan ahead, we will demonstrate the apparatus," he stated. He added that school, church, and community groups can make appointments to tour the station or have a GSFR member give a talk or hold a question-and-answer session.

GSFR also offers services to businesses located in the area. "Stefan Kuenzli is the deputy chief who handles inspections (for businesses)," stated Good. "He can help go through basics of sprinkler systems and a fire evacuation plan." Good pointed out that Kuenzli can point out areas that need to be improved. "He has a checklist with recommendations he can provide," said Good, who explained that GSFR president Tom Curtis is also knowledgeable in that area. "All those resources are there for (area businesses)," said Good.

Keiser noted that there is a misconception that GSFR is an enforcement agency. "We comply, but we are not a municipal run entity," he noted. "At no point will you get a fine from us," said Good, who also stated that the inspection and preplanning information will give a business information it can take to an insurer.
