An evening to remember

GHMS holds open house

On Nov. 13, students who participate in the WCVM television station at the Gerald Huesken Middle School (GHMS) in Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD) presented "WCVM This Evening" during the open house at the recently constructed school.

"WCVM This Evening," hosts Logan Jack, Delaney Rivera, and Lilana Poston kicked off the show, which was broadcast on monitors throughout the school. Interviewer Alyse Biuckians spoke with principal Rachel Metzinger about the activities available to those visiting the school, including the art show being held on the lower level. Metzinger noted that of all the unique features of the new school, she really loves the pods, which have allowed the faculty to create small communities in the larger school community. The school has nine pods, and each has five rooms with movable walls to give teachers more flexibility.

The technology education facility was highlighted in a special segment that focused on sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade levels using basic and advanced tools to learn problem solving, layout, and design concepts. Also pointed out were the printer room with both large-format and 3D printers and the design classroom where students work with computer-aided design (CAD) software.

Biuckians also interviewed new CVSD superintendent Daniel Hartman, asking about his first months in the position. Hartman noted he was impressed by the strong community, diversity, and programs to help students in their chosen pathways.

Student Ily Neufield presented an update on Student Council, and a video was shown of students introducing their parents who are military veterans. A spotlight on Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports was also presented.

Biuckians then interviewed retired CVSD superintendent and school namesake Gerald Huesken, who spoke about his position with the Conestoga Valley Education Foundation (CVEF), which was founded in 1991 and has given away nearly $2 million in education grants, including a $180,000 grant that will provide a hydroponics facility. Other spotlights included the school Green Team reporting that it had collected more than 600 pounds of cans and bottles and a weather forecast with Nevaeh Cordero.

Other students who worked to present the broadcast included Caleb Martin, Olivia Sullivan, Jordyan Lehman, Isaac Fox, Trinity Ford, Emma Popovich, Tereza Al Badawi, Adaliah Reveron, Kerlyan Peta Castro, Janeyshka Alvarez, and Kendall Gehman.
