Art Exhibition, Film Screening Posted

We the People First Fridays will open a visual art exhibition and present a documentary on March 4 at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster.

In collaboration with The Femina Network, We the People First Fridays will present "GIRL," a curated visual art exhibition including the tablecloth project. Doors to the Regitz Gallery will open for a reception at 5:30 p.m., and the exhibition will continue through Friday, March 25.

Curated by Jenny Schulder Brant and Norma Vazquez, "GIRL" is a hands-on, collaborative, interactive installation featuring art created by woman artists of Lancaster. Attendees will walk through an "apartment," witnessing some of the raw emotion that comes with the freedom of uninhibited self in the comfort of one's own home.

The exhibit will also feature "The Tablecloth Project," a massive textile piece conceived in 2020 from the idea that the dinner table has always been a central focus in the home for collaboration, communication, and nurturing. Artist and project director Brant envisioned a long table, adorned with a cloth designed and embroidered by female community members. The project will also include panels from organizations in Lancaster that are run by or support women. Tricia Fackler and Atomic Design contributed material and expertise to "The Tablecloth Project."

Vendor tables will line the lobby promoting local providers, artists, and academics with interests and services in women's issues.

As part of the On Screen/In Person film series, the documentary "Equal Means Equal" will be screened at 7 p.m. in Steinman Hall. It will be preceded by a panel discussion at 6:15 p.m. and followed by a breakout sessions. The film explores gender inequity in the U.S., and it features women's rights activists and leaders.

Presenters in the panel discussion will be "Equal Means Equal" filmmaker Kamala Lopez, Natalie White, Joel Marshall, and Dr. Brigette Alexander. Gunnar Rohrbacher will assist in facilitating the post-show sessions. For this final portion of the event, the audience will be divided into two groups for moderated discussions of the film experience and gender-based responses.

The event will follow the masking guidelines and COVID protocols of Millersville University.

No tickets are required to view the art exhibit, and tickets are free of charge for the film screening. To obtain tickets, call 717-871-7600, visit http://www.ArtsMU.com, or visit the box office at the Ware Center or in the Student Memorial Center on the Millersville University campus.
