On Saturday, Jan. 23, artwork will fill the program room at the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, when the library hosts its third annual Youth Art Walk from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Although the event has been held in the past, this year's format will be a little different, said Kim Beach, operations coordinator. "In prior years, we had art set up around the library, but this year it will all be in one area as well as in the display case in the lobby," she explained. "We're using our large program room so we can keep everything socially distanced."
The Art Walk features the work of Donegal High School and Donegal Junior High School students. In past years, artists were invited to attend and talk about their art with visitors. Because of COVID-19 concerns, that is changing this year as well, Beach said.
"We're making a program for visitors, and we'll number the artwork in the program," she stated. "We'll give everyone a pen and a program when they come in, and they can leave comments for the students as they view the artwork. We felt it was important for the students to get feedback, even if they couldn't be there in person."
Artwork displayed at the show will vary from ceramics to paintings and drawings. "We're not sure what we're going to get, but we're excited about it," Beach noted. "That's part of the fun. It's always a surprise."
The idea for the Art Walk came about after Mount Joy began hosting a Festival of the Arts. "We wanted to somehow be a part of that in our own way, even though we're not located on Main Street," Beach said. "The first year, we contacted the high school and asked if they wanted to participate. Last year, we also invited the junior high students."
Beach said planning for the Art Walk began in December, and organizers agreed they would hold the event even with the necessary changes.
"Art shows at schools have been canceled, so this is a place where students can show the public their art," she stated. "They have a place to showcase their work, and it's also a good way for families to come in and support their students in a safe environment."
