Artists sought to create mosaic

The City of Lancaster is seeking a qualified artist or artist team for the commission of a sidewalk mosaic in a hardscaped courtyard to be located on the southeast side of the Plum Street roundabout.

The City of Lancaster Department of Public Works plans to install a permanent roundabout at the intersection of North Plum and East New streets and Park Avenue. A temporary roundabout is currently installed in its place. Construction will begin Wednesday, Aug. 30, and will be completed by June 2024.

The roundabout will be accompanied by a variety of amenities, including vegetated curbing, street trees and other foliage, a hardscaped courtyard, street furniture, and public art in the form of a sidewalk mosaic. The city is seeking an artist to complete the 40-square-foot mosaic to be installed in the concrete of the courtyard.

The city is committed to creating opportunities for local artists, be it through commissioned works or by facilitating learning opportunities for skill development. Artists are preferred to reside in or near Lancaster city, although non-local artists are also welcome to apply, particularly those who have experience working with emerging artists. Non-local artists will be asked to provide hands-on experience to one local artist throughout the artistic process.

Selection will take place using a two-phase process. A selection committee will first review applications submitted through the request for qualification. Up to three finalists will be selected by the committee. Finalists will then be invited to complete phase two of the selection process, which will include the final design proposal. Final design proposals will be reviewed by the Public Art Advisory Board.

The deadline to submit proposals is Monday, July 17. For more details, go to http://www.cityoflancasterpa.gov.
