Atglen Community Day To Feature Car Show, Crafts, Games And More

After a scaled-down version of Atglen Community Day was held in September of 2020 because of the pandemic, the annual event will return with a full slate of activities this year on Saturday, Sept. 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Atglen Community Park, 404 Ridge Ave., Atglen.

"We are back 100%. Some of the things we have done in the past but skipped last year (are) a live auction, a pie-eating contest, the dunk tank and a moon bounce for children," said Cristi Hahn, office coordinator for Penningtonville Presbyterian Church, noting all these activities will return this year.

The event is organized by Penningtonville Presbyterian Church and Atglen Public Library (APL), with support from Atglen Borough and sponsoring businesses. Proceeds will go to the library and local service organizations, including the Christiana Fire Company, the Christiana Community Ambulance Association, the Parkesburg POINT youth center and the Octorara Area Food Cupboard.

"This year we are not requiring masks, but we are following current CDC guidelines," said Lillian Thompson, event co-chair, noting that hand sanitizer will be available throughout the day.

Crafters, along with community organizations, government officials and home-based business vendors, will be set up in the park. Those who would like to reserve a space may do so by emailing Maureen.K.Fox@gmail.com.

There will be entertainment throughout the day, including Matt Holub on acoustic guitar. The Da Vinci Center will present a science show at approximately 11 a.m., and Critter Connections will bring live animals and reptiles to view at 3 p.m. Members of the Octorara Ballet and Steel City Dance and Gymnastics will offer demonstrations throughout the day. The Octorara Junior-Senior High School band will perform the national anthem during the opening ceremony at 10 a.m.

The church deacons will sell baked goods and mums. Chicken barbecue will be offered for sale along with sausage sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, hand-cut french fries and ice cream.

The ninth annual car show, which will benefit APL, will be held this year as usual. Vehicles will be parked along Ridge Avenue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Vehicle owners may register on the day of the show or in advance by calling APL at 610-593-6848. Dash plaques and goodie bags will be given to the first 25 paid registrants. People's Choice trophies will be awarded to first- and second-place winners.

Before the Community Day festivities start, a Family Fun Walk/Run will be held, sponsored by the Atglen Park and Recreation Commission. Same-day registration for the event will begin at 9 a.m., with the start at 9:30 a.m. The registration and start location will be the Penningtonville Presbyterian Church parking lot on Main Street. Participants are asked to bring a nonperishable food item for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard in lieu of an entry fee. More information about the walk/run is available by calling the borough office at 610-593-6854.
