Atglen Public Library offers Summer Reading Program

Atglen Public Library is offering a variety of programming for patrons of all ages this summer as part of the Summer Reading Program themed "All Together Now." Registration is required by choosing "Register for Programs" at http://www.atglenpubliclibrary.org or by calling 610-593-6848.

As part of a reading incentive program, children, teenagers and adults may take part in the library's "Read and Bead" activity. Children are asked to read or have a book read to them for at least 30 minutes a day. Adults and teens are asked to read for 60 minutes per day.

"When they check in with their reading log, they can exchange their time for a bead of different value," explained library director Robbyn Kehoe. "There are beads for 30 minutes, one hour, two hours and silver charms for three hours. We give them a cable and they can make a bracelet or necklace or hang it on their backpack."

She said that participants can choose the colors of the beads to make their own creations. "Our goal is that readers don't compete against each other; they try to do better themselves every day," Kehoe said. "The real point of summer reading is for kids to read every day, so they don't lose their academic skills when they go back to school."

Kehoe said the program is designed to attract children who enjoy reading, as well as "reluctant" readers. "It's not really about reaching kids who are already reading but an incentive to kids who don't," she said.

Additionally, children can earn Patch Power activity cards this summer. It is necessary to attend three library programs to earn a patch.
