Atglen Public Library to offer new fall programming

Several new activities have been added to the lineup of programming being offered by the Atglen Public Library (APL), 121 Main St., Atglen.

New this fall are Monday Meetups, STEAM Saturdays, Switch Game Play, Itty Bitty Beats and PreK PlayKrew.

Monday Meetups, which began on Sept. 25, will run on Mondays through Dec. 18 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Open to youths ages 7 to 11, the program will include board games, STEM challenges, video games and Legos. "(The first day of the program) we had a challenge where they were given parameters to make handmade Lego race cars, which they raced to win," noted APL director Robbyn Kehoe.

STEAM Saturdays will be held on Oct. 21, Nov. 18 and Dec. 30 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The monthly events are held with professional program leaders through a PAsmart grant and Video Game Clubs of America. Professional leaders will join the sessions virtually.

Switch Game Play will be held for teens on the first and third Tuesdays of the month through Dec. 19 from 3 to 5 p.m. "It's a multiplayer Switch platform," Kehoe said, noting that there are a variety of games for attendees to choose from.

Itty Bitty Beats is being offered on Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11 a.m. through Dec. 13. "It's a lapsit program. Miss Ashley leads the program, but the adults work with their own children in learning songs and hand motions," Kehoe pointed out. "It's teaching the child nursery rhymes and fingerplays that are crucial for learning early literacy skills."

Pre-K PlayKrew is being offered on Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. through Dec. 28. The program is designed to help prepare children for kindergarten. "There are four rotating sessions: dramatic play, board games and puzzles, building play and sensory play," Kehoe explained. "We are focusing on social and emotional development - how to share and how to wait your turn - and integrating fine motor skills."

Ongoing programs at the library for children include Music & Movement on Mondays at 10:30 a.m.; Story Time and Craft on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.; and PAWS for Reading, where children read to a friendly dog, on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 4:30 p.m.

For adults, there is the Monday Mile Walking Club at 5:30 p.m.; Quilting 101 on Fridays, Oct. 20, Nov. 17 and Dec. 15 at 3:30 p.m.; and the Adult Book Club on Thursdays, Oct. 26, Nov. 16 and Dec. 21, at 6:30 p.m.
