Atglen Scouts To Present Turkey Trot

Cub Scout Pack 20 of Atglen will present its second annual Turkey Trot, a 5K family fun run/walk, on Friday, Nov. 25, at the Octorara School District campus, 228 Highland Road, Atglen. Registration will be at 9 a.m., and the walk and run will follow at 9:30 a.m.

Last year's event attracted approximately 40 participants. "Some signed up that day. It was beautiful weather," said troop chairman Denim Kurtzhals, race coordinator. "There were both families and individual runners."

In addition to being a fundraiser for the Cub Scouts, the event is designed as a way to collect canned goods for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC). "We are encouraging each participant to bring two canned goods," said Kurtzhals.

Walkers and runners will travel the same course that the Octorara cross-country team uses for its home meets. The race will be held in the fields surrounding the intermediate school, and runners and walkers will circle the baseball, soccer and field hockey fields.

On race day, runners will go first, followed by the walkers. A shorter option of 1.5 miles will also be available.

There will be separate registration fees for adults and for children ages 5 to 12. Those who register in advance will receive a discount. For more information and to register, visit https://runsignup.com/Race/PA/Atglen/Pack20TurkeyTrot.

Same-day registration will also be accepted. Spectators are welcome to attend to cheer on the participants and to bring donations for the OAFC.

Proceeds from registration fees will help with the cost of Pack 20's activities and provide membership scholarships for those in need.

Pack 20 is open to youths in kindergarten through grade five. Scouts enjoy traditional fall and summer camping activities and other experiences, including a Pinewood Derby, a Klondike Derby, a bonfire at Jim Landis Woodland Preserve in Atglen and a bike rodeo.

The troop's next fundraiser will be its annual Christmas tree recycling program, which is offered to residents of Atglen and surrounding communities. Scouts will pick up trees on Wednesday, Dec. 28, and Sunday, Jan. 8, 2023. Residents will be asked to place their trees outside on the porch, driveway or sidewalk for pickup on the day selected by the resident. A registration form will be posted in December on the "Atglen Pack 20" Facebook page.

Atglen Cub Scout Pack 20 meets on the first, third and fourth Tuesdays of the month at either the Lions Community Building, 325 N. Bridge St., Christiana, or Penningtonville Presbyterian Church, 406 Main St., Atglen, depending on the den. For more information, email pack20@cccbsa.org.
