Audubon Society posts activities

The Quittapahilla Audubon Society has slated two field trips and a presentation. The activities are open to people of all ages, and there is no fee. Registration is not required. For more details, visit http://www.qasaudubon.org.

A field trip will be held on Sunday, Oct. 13, at Swatara State Park. Participants should meet at 2:30 p.m. at the Trout Run trailhead parking lot for the observation of flora and fauna. For more details, call leader Rosemary Spreha at 717-649-2680.

Brant Portner, an environmental education specialist for the Pennsylvania Game Commission's Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, will present "Middle Creek: Not Just Snow Geese" on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 723 Lehman St., Lebanon.

The presentation will provide a look at Middle Creek's history over the last 50 years and the habitat improvements currently underway to benefit wildlife.

Portner has a degree in biology with a focus in ecology from Penn State University and a master's degree in forest resources from the University of Arkansas at Monticello. He has served as a park ranger for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and a forester for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.

Attendees are asked to enter the church from the parking lot off of Spruce Street.

The Audubon Society will offer a field trip at the Union Canal Tunnel Park on Sunday, Oct. 27. Attendees will observe the flora and fauna along the trails. They should meet at 2:30 p.m. at the park's 25th Street parking lot. To learn more, call leader Fritz Heilman at 717-273-0487.
