Audubon Society posts activities

Quittapahilla Audubon Society has planned field trips and a presentation.

Two trips will be offered to observe the "sky dance" of the American timberdoodle, also known as the woodcock. The first activity will take place at Swatara State Park on Sunday, March 19, and attendees should meet at 6:45 p.m. at the Trout Run Trailhead parking lot. The second trip will be held on Sunday, March 26, at Memorial Lake State Park. Attendees should meet at 6:45 p.m. in the Upper Road parking lot. For both trips, attendees should bring a flashlight. Questions may be directed to leader Gary Kinkley at 717-503-4027.

A presentation titled "Grassland Raptor Conservation at Milton Hershey School" will be held on Wednesday, March 22, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 723 Lehman St., Lebanon. The parking lot is located behind the church off Spruce Street. Attendees should enter the church from the parking lot entrance.

Nate McKelvie will share about regional conservation efforts that involve installing and monitoring barn owl and American kestrel nest boxes in the Hershey area. McKelvie will also talk about educational opportunities that benefit Milton Hershey School and other local schools and how local residents can support barn owl and kestrel conservation in the region.

McKelvie has been a licensed bird bander since 2002 and specializes in conservation efforts with barn owls, saw-whet owls, and American kestrels. He is a middle school science teacher at Milton Hershey School, where he has been spearheading grassland raptor conservation on Milton Hershey properties since 2008.

Quittapahilla Audubon Society's programs and field trips are suitable for people of all ages and are open to the public, with no registration or fee required. For more information, visit http://www.qasaudubon.org.
