Author to speak to historical society

The Solanco Historical Society will present "Watt & Shand, Book and Story" on Saturday, May 20, at 1:30 p.m. at the society's Archives Building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway (Route 222), Quarryville. The society's building is located 6 miles south of Quarryville, across from the Robert Fulton Birthplace. The program is free and open to the public.

Nancy Groff, great-granddaughter of Peter T. Watt, will speak about the people who made the Watt & Shand department store a vibrant presence in Lancaster County. For decades, the store marked the southeastern boundary of Penn Square. Generations of Lancaster County citizens remember special items they purchased at Watt & Shand, such a wedding dress, a suit for a first job or a gift for a family member.

Groff has written a book about the department store. Copies of the book are available to purchase at Solanco Historical Society and Aaron's Books, 35 E. Main St., Lititz.
