Bake sale to aid EASD facility dogs

Common Sense 2.0 in Elizabethtown will hold a bake sale on Saturday, May 6, to raise money for the Elizabethtown Area School District (EASD) facility dogs. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at Christ Church United Church of Christ, 247 S. Market St., Elizabethtown.

The goal of the facility dog program is to support students who may be experiencing a barrier to learning within the educational setting. These barriers may include anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, or autism. The goal of the program is to lessen students' stress and anxiety during activities occurring during the school day so they may be able to focus and engage in classes better, feel more comfortable opening up to counselors and teachers, and find comfort and connection within the school environment.

The canines and their handlers have undergone intensive training through United Disabilities Services (UDS). EASD's current facility dogs are Murphy at the high school, Kolben at the middle school, and Remi at East High Street Elementary. Bainbridge Elementary and the Bear Creek School are on the UDS wait list for a facility dog of their own.

The dogs are owned by EASD, and the program is completely funded by donations or grants.
