Bangor Episcopal Church To Celebrate 300 Years Of Faith

Bangor Episcopal Church, 2099 Main St. (Route 23), Churchtown (Narvon), has been observing its tricentennial in 2022. Founded by Welsh settlers in 1722, Bangor Church is the oldest Episcopal church in the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania and the second-oldest congregation in Lancaster County. Donegal Presbyterian Church was founded a year earlier, in 1721.

The current church building was erected along Main Street in 1830 and is surrounded by a historic churchyard. Twenty-two veterans of the Revolutionary War are buried in the churchyard, along with many prominent early citizens of the community. The church is on the National Register of Historic Places. The current pastor is the Rev. Canon Mark A. Scheneman.

The main anniversary events will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1 and 2. On Saturday, Choral Evensong will be sung in the church at 5 p.m. The service will include a short concert of choral music by the Mid-Atlantic Welsh Choir under the direction of Mari Morgan. Following Evensong, an anniversary banquet will take place at the Caernarvon Fire Company, 2145 Main St., Narvon. Reservations for the banquet are required by emailing bangorclergy@gmail.com.

On Oct. 2, the bishop of the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania, the Right Rev. Audrey C. Scanlan, will preside at a 10 a.m. Festival Eucharist. Singers from the choir of St. James Episcopal Church in Lancaster will be featured.
