Banners Honor Honey Brook Heroes

Honey Brook Borough residents who want to commemorate a loved one who served in the United States armed forces are invited to sponsor a banner that will be displayed along Route 322 (Horseshoe Pike) as part of the Heroes of Honey Brook Borough Military Banner Program.

The banners, which measure 24 inches by 48 inches, include photos of the service members, list their branch and period of service and mention any awards or honors they have received, such as the Purple Heart, Silver Star or Bronze Star. A fee is charged to sponsor the double-sided banner, and the sponsor or sponsoring agency's name appears on the bottom of the banner.

The first set of banners was installed in the borough in August of 2020. The banners were put in place by Bill Ford, public works director, with the help of Tel Hai Retirement Community volunteers, who provided a scissors lift to hang the banners.

"We have 15 banners (currently on display). They are on Route 322 on the east side of Route 10," noted Tricia Swinty, borough clerk. "(People depicted on the banner) have to be a current or past resident of the borough." She noted that the banners will be kept in place for two years and then returned to the family or sponsor.

The effort came about after borough council member Rich Florio heard about the program when he was part of the Western Chester County Council of Governments. "We got the idea from Atglen, who has a robust banner program," he noted.

Local businesses and nonprofit organizations may also sponsor a banner. "September Farms decided to donate the money for one of our applicants," Florio said, noting that the banner will depict a World War II veteran who was recommended by the Honey Brook American Legion.

Applications to sponsor a banner are available at http://www.honeybrookborough.net or by visiting Honey Brook Borough Hall, 71 Pequea Ave., during its hours of operation, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. A sample banner is currently on display at the borough hall.
