Baseball organizations join forces

Solanco Little League and Solanco Youth Baseball have merged to form the Solanco Youth Baseball Association, effective Jan. 2. This merger came after years of collaboration and shared resources, and it creates a unified organization set to provide an enhanced baseball program for the youths of southern Lancaster County.

The Solanco Youth Baseball Association will boast nearly 400 participants, from T-ball to 14U divisions, and will provide local and countywide playing options. The Solanco Baseball Complex in Colerain Township will host the majority of in-house rec league activities, while travel teams will compete in the Lancaster County Youth Baseball League.

Established in 1989, baseball in Solanco began with the county's first sanctioned Little League organization. In 1997, Solanco Little League purchased 16 acres from Pioneer Seed Company, and this property evolved into the Solanco Baseball Complex. The first game played at the complex occurred in the spring of 2000, noted Mike Hart, the driving force behind the design and formation of the Solanco Baseball Complex as it stands today.

The merger responds to evolving dynamics in youth baseball, with the rise of travel teams starting in 2003 and a shift in participation toward fewer sanctioned Little League programs. At the time of the merger, Solanco and Warwick were the only sanctioned Little Leagues left in Lancaster County.

The Solanco Youth Baseball Association aims to go beyond league games, introducing coaching clinics, camp opportunities, winter training, and a travel baseball program. This comprehensive approach seeks to develop well-rounded athletes.

Alumni of the local baseball organizations include Josh Squatrito, a former pitcher in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Squatrito is a board member for the new association.

While the official start of the league is in April, the Solanco Youth Baseball Association is already gearing up for the season. Early sign-ups are open at http://www.sybaseball.com.
