Bevivino earns Eagle Scout Award

A Scout from Troop 25 in East York has earned the Eagle Scout Award, signifying the highest advancement rank in Scouts BSA. Joseph Bevivino III received his award from Troop 25 Assistant Scoutmaster David Zelis during Troop 25's Court of Honor held on Feb. 28 at Advent Lutheran Church in York.

For his Eagle Scout service project, Joey, son of Elaine and Perry Bevivino, replaced a bridge over a small creek at Rocky Ridge County Park. The project required removing the existing bridge by digging out the supports, disposing of the old parts and pieces, installing the new bridge using telephone poles as supports and pressure-treated plywood as the decking, and cleaning up the area by spreading stones and dirt to level the ground. The project took a total of 110 man hours to complete.

Starting as a Tiger Cub in Pack 25, Joey has been a Scout for 12 years. Since crossing over to Troop 25, he has earned 31 merit badges and served as senior patrol leader, patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, chaplain, and junior assistant Scoutmaster in the troop. He is also a member of Scouts BSA's national honor society, the Order of the Arrow (OA), and has served as an OA representative. Joey has graduated from Central York High School and will attend the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., to study business management. He hopes to eventually be commissioned as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force.

Joey thanked his parents, fellow Scouts, friends, and family members for their help in completing his project and his Eagle requirements. Attendees at the Court of Honor included state Sen. Kristin Phillips-Hill and state Rep. Joe D'Orsie, who presented Joey with citations, and representatives of the Marine Corps League and the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, who presented Joey with a Good Citizenship Award and a Certificate of Recognition. U.S. Sen. Bob Casey sent Joey a letter of congratulations, and, in recognition of his achievement, the new Eagle Scout received a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from U.S. Rep. Scott Perry and an American flag that had flown over the United States Capitol.
