Big Spring Farm Day planned

The Swiss Pioneer Preservation Association will hold Big Spring Farm Day on Saturday, Aug. 5, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 735 Spruce Road, New Holland.

New this year will be a wood shingle mill demonstration. Other demonstrations will include threshing by hand with a flail, using horse power, and using steam engine or tractor power; sawing logs with a steam engine; weaving on a loom; baking bread in a beehive oven; and pottery making, chair caning, and other old crafts. Hit-and-miss and other engines and equipment will be displayed. Tours of the 1786 Peter Martin log house will be available, and German singing will take place at 12:05 p.m.

Attendees may bring collectibles and crafts. Additionally, they are invited to bring antique tractors, farm equipment and horse-drawn wagons, buggies, and other appartus for a 1 p.m. parade. The site has a new loading dock for safer unloading.

Food options will include sausage sandwiches and iron kettle soup, along with ice cream made using a hit-and-miss engine.
