Bingo for a Purr-fect Cause

Come out for bingo on Sunday, April 12, and you could take home some cash while helping cats in need.

Precious Paws Community Cats will hold its second annual bingo at the Millersville VFW, 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville, from 1 to 5 p.m. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m., and food service will begin at noon.

"We will be playing 24 games total," explained Kathy Ann Kramer, treasurer of Precious Paws. "Twenty of the games will be regular bingo with a $100 cash prize for each. There will also be four special games, including a final game with a grand prize of a Kate Spade tote filled with $400 in cash."

She said the afternoon will be split into two sessions, with 10 regular games and two special games followed by an intermission, or "cat nap," she joked, and then the second group of regular and special games.

"We'll play for the letter C, the letter A and the letter T in the special games," Kramer noted. "We'll fill the whole card for the final game and the grand prize."

Plenty of food options will be available.

"Our volunteers are baking, so we'll hold a bake sale within the event," she remarked. "Food for Thought Catering will provide the food, including barbecue sandwiches, macaroni salad, hot dogs, chips, water and soda, all available for purchase."

A variety of giveaways will also be held, with prizes including an Italian basket; tickets to area attractions, including the Fulton Theatre, Longwood Gardens and Hershey Gardens; and a Precious Paws basket, complete with a cat bed and other items.

"We'll have our merch table as well," Kramer said, with succulents and other Precious Paws items for sale. "We also launched a campaign called Hats for Cats, with myself and another volunteer. We crochet hats, and if you buy a hat, you spay a cat. We'll have some hats for sale at the bingo as well."

Money will also be raised at the bingo through a 50/50 drawing.

All proceeds will benefit Precious Paws Community Cats, a Manheim-based nonprofit Trap-Neuter-Return organization founded by Samantha MacIntyre. The organization works to stabilize and decrease the population of community cats. Additionally, the nonprofit ensures feral cats receive the care and attention they need to stay healthy.

Kramer noted that she has set a $15,000 goal for the bingo fundraiser, and she expects to meet if not exceed it.

All money raised will help in the final stages of opening of a central hub for the organization, which will provide space for pre-surgery and post-surgery staging for cats, a nurturing environment for sick cats to recuperate and secure storage for essential supplies.

The organization held its first bingo last year at a facility in Mount Gretna, where the event sold out and space was a bit limited. This year, Kramer changed the venue to accommodate twice as many people, although she still encourages purchasing tickets early because she expects the bingo to sell out.

"When you come to our bingo, you're helping to support our final push to open our cat barn and cross us over the finish line to get up and running," she said. "We're very humbled and so grateful for the support we've received from the community. We feel our mission continues to be blessed, and we want to thank people for believing in us and helping the cats. It's a rough life out there for them, and we want to help in any way we can."
