Bingo fundraiser to aid park rangers abroad

A bingo fundraiser will take place on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m. in the banquet room at the New Holland American Legion, 35 S. Hoover Ave., New Holland. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. Cash and designer bags will be the prizes. In addition to bingo, the event will feature door prizes, giveaway drawings, and refreshments.

The fundraiser is held locally by Tony Andes, who will participate in a motorcycle ride in the Kingdom of Bhutan in November through Rally for Rangers. The organization has the mission to protect the world's special places by empowering park rangers with new motorcycles and equipment. The organization's work has reached Bhutan, Mongolia, Peru, and beyond.

The bingo event will help to support Andes' goal of raising $6,000 to $12,000 to purchase one or two motorcycles for a park ranger in Bhutan. All donations will go to the Mongol Ecology Center, the sponsor of Rally for Rangers.

Bhutan is a small country located between India and China, and the country includes a portion of the Himalaya mountain range. In Bhutan, illegal logging and poaching put strain on endangered species such as red pandas, takin, Bengal tigers, and snow leopards.

Andes, a resident of New Holland, has been a motorcycle rider for more than 35 years, and his hobby has included racing, travel, and more. For the last 12 years or so, he has concentrated on adventure riding - that is, riding on and off the road in remote areas. He has also been a motorcycle safety instructor for the last 17 years.

Andes learned of Rally for Rangers last year at an adventure rally in New Hampshire. Through an application process, he was selected to be one of 15 riders to participate in the trip to Bhutan.
