Bingo will benefit cheer team

Wrapping up its most successful season to date, Donegal High School cheerleading will host a fundraiser to support future opportunities for the athletes.

Donegal Cheer Purse & Power Tool Bingo will be held on Saturday, May 3, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the high school, 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m.

"The program has never hosted a bingo before," said head varsity coach Kellye Herbert. "We thought it was a great way to showcase our team with the community while also adding some fun, because who doesn't love some purses and power tools?"

Admission to bingo will include three cards and 25 games.

"We will feature purses from Coach, Michael Kors, lululemon, Vera Bradley, Bogg and Kate Spade, as well as power tools from Milwaukee and DeWalt," Herbert said.

Gift cards from local restaurants will also be among the prizes.

Several giveaways will be featured, including a 50/50 plus a chance to win coolers, a purse and a power tool.

"You can also ask the team to do a stunt for a donation," Herbert stated.

A variety of food will be available for purchase, including hot dogs, subs, chips, drinks and baked goods.

"The proceeds of this event support our booster club in funding our athletes for cheer camp and to offset the cost of traveling to Orlando, Fla., for the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) national championship in the spring of 2026," Herbert shared.

She reflected on the past season, noting that the team had an exciting and successful year that combined competition with community service.

"We volunteered in our community by making over 100 'go bags' for the shelter in Elizabethtown; marching in the Marietta Memorial Day parade; and cheering on our football, basketball and wrestling teams," said Herbert, who is joined in leading the team by assistant coach Jaema Bonte.

The team, which featured 12 athletes, attended 11 competitions between August and February, including its second year attending the PIAA district event, where the group finished in sixth place in its division.

That win earned the team the opportunity to advance to the state championship held at the Santander Arena in Reading in February.

"Facing over 40 teams in our division, it was an honor just to be in attendance with the best of the best our state has to offer," Herbert recalled. "The team did not advance to semifinals, but the experience was outstanding with a zero-deduction routine."

The team also attended the Keystone Regional competition in Reading, earning sixth place and a bid to attend the UCA national championship in Orlando.

"The team finished out the year strong with National Cheerleading Association's Reach the Beach mini nationals in Ocean City, Md., for a weekend of great competition," she said, adding that the team brought home a second-place win in one division and a third-place win in another.

While the team performed well at competitions, the athletes also shined academically, Herbert said.

"The DHS cheer team takes the 'student-athlete' part of our program very seriously with an overall team GPA of 3.90, making our team competitive on the mat, sideline and in the classroom," she noted.

Herbert invites people to attend the bingo to have fun and help the team members continue to compete.

"Come support the Donegal cheer team," she said. "We look forward to hosting you and watching our community walk away with fun prizes."

Tickets for the bingo may be purchased from any high school or junior high school member of the cheerleading team or by emailing donegalcheerbooster@outlook.com. There is a discount for purchasing tickets in advance, but tickets will also be available at the door.
