Bird Club Plans Field Trips

The Lancaster County Bird Club will offer several field trips in September. The public is invited free of charge. All participants must register with the trip leader no later than 6 p.m. the day before the trip. Unless otherwise noted, activities will begin at 7 a.m.

On Saturday, Sept. 11, the destination will be Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area. Participants will look for fall migrants, including warblers, flycatchers, thrushes, and shorebirds. For more details, contact Ted Nichols at 717-856-3851 or tanicholsii@gmail.com.

On Saturday, Sept. 18, the destination will be Chestnut Grove Natural Area. This is an ideal place to view wildlife and observe nature due to habitat diversity, which includes stream corridors, wetlands, open water, grasslands, and forested uplands, as well as its location along the Susquehanna River migratory corridor. The Ironville Community Park Raptor Watch will be held on Sunday, Sept. 19, at 9:30 a.m. Target species include broad-winged and sharp-shinned hawks, American kestrel, osprey, and bald eagle. The viewing area is level and comfortable. Folks may come and go as they please and may want to bring a chair and a lunch. Restrooms and a pavilion will be available. A field trip to the Noel Dorwart Natural Area in East Hempfield Township will take place on Saturday, Sept. 25. The target birds are fall migrants. Interested individuals may contact Emily Broich at 717-333-9146 or emilybroich@gmail.com.
