Birdsboro Farmers Market opens for 10th season

The Birdsboro Farmers Market, offering a range of goods from fresh produce and honey to homemade jewelry, crafts and pet items, opened for its 10th season on May 10. The outdoor market is open every other Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon through Oct. 25 at Main Bird Park, 226 N. Water St., Birdsboro.

The farmers market committee presents the event, with support from the Birdsboro Parks and Recreation Department. "We also have a sponsor this year," said department president Christen Thompson. "American Legion Post 626 sponsors the market along with Stonersville Social Club to help keep costs low for our vendors and bring in more entertainment."

This year's market includes returning favorites, as well as new vendors. "We have KJM Produce and New Life Coffee Company joining us for their first season," Thompson said. "We have MA3D4U Fidget Factory, who makes fidgets from a 3D printer and Hidden Pearl Homestead." Hidden Pearl Homestead offers tomato and hot pepper plants, strawberry plants and organic chicken and quail eggs.

Also new this year is a vendor from Fairytail Farm in Birdsboro, which sells "Gardener's Gold" (rabbit manure), with 100% of all profits going to Ghandi's Refuge Animal Rescue.

Returning vendors include Lotus Lynn Wellness, which offers a variety of herbal tea blends; Down to Earth Refillery, which offers eco-friendly household items; and Crafts by Jodi, which includes crocheted items.

Also featured is Queen of Hearts Honey, owned by Elverson beekeeper Chris Eckert, who is also a member of the farmers market committee. Other members of the committee are Alex Ruth and Melissa Houck.

The parks and recreation department also has a booth, and it offers Birdsboro T-shirts for sale and a coloring activity for children.

Featured on opening day was music by singer Rob Twaddle, a Mother's Day craft for children, an antique tractor display, fire trucks and other emergency vehicles from the Birdsboro-Union Fire Department and Monarch Fire Company of Douglassville and two food trucks - Choy's Caribbean Stir Fry and Blue Kraken BBQ.

All local crafters and small businesses are invited to set up a booth at the farmers market; it is not necessary to be a resident of Birdsboro to participate. Those interested in selling items are asked to complete a vendor application.

Thompson explained that items for sale must be locally sourced. Crafts must be handmade and produced by the vendor. Home-based business vendors are not permitted.

Those who shop at the market generally will find a variety of plants, flowers, canned and pickled goods, homemade baked goods and bread, tea and coffee, handmade soaps, wreaths and more.

Community organizations and church groups are also represented, and there are generally local food trucks on hand as well. The market sometimes features live musical entertainment, and craft activities are offered for children.

Special themed markets are also planned. "We will have a Christmas in July and trick or treat at the market," Thompson added.
