Bonsai program, concert slated

"The Basics of Bonsai" will be offered on Saturday, Aug. 12, at 10 a.m., sponsored by the Friends of the Tanger Arboretum. This program was originally scheduled for June 3 but was postponed.

Presenter Ryan Wagner, an associate professor and the chairperson of the Department of Biology at Millersville University, will share a brief history of bonsai, information on the aesthetics and horticulture of bonsai, and tips on how to care for developing bonsai. Participants will also learn tips on the do's and don'ts of bonsai with attention to aesthetics and general health. Wagner will demonstrate some techniques to shape a new bonsai.

There is a fee, with a discount for people under 18. Friends of the Tanger Arboretum members will receive complimentary admission but should still register for the program. Advance ticket purchase is recommended as the program has limited capacity.

Members of the American Horticultural Society's Reciprocal Admission Program may register for tickets in advance and must show a valid membership card upon checking in. AHS members should contact Emily Miller at emily.miller@lancasterhistory.org for tickets.

A Music on the Lawn concert will take place on Saturday, Aug. 19, from 5 to 7 p.m. The concert will feature salsa, Latin jazz, and cumbia music from a trio from Sonora Los Fantasticos. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own blankets, foldable chairs, and picnics. Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome.

There is a ticket fee for adults. Tickets are free for LancasterHistory members and people under 18. Tickets may be purchased in advance, or they may be obtained at the door with cash or credit card.

In the event of inclement weather, the decision on whether to hold the concert will be made at noon on Saturday, Aug.19, and ticketholders will be notified. The rain date for this event is Sunday, Aug. 20, from 1 to 3 p.m.
