Books For A Bargain

Ready to stock up on summer reading material? Look no further than the Friends of the Milanof-Schock Library book sale. The event will kick off with a preview night on Thursday, June 17, from 5 to 8 p.m. It will continue on Friday, June 18, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, June 19, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The book sale will be held in the gymnasium at Kraybill Mennonite School, 598 Kraybill Church Road, Mount Joy. The entrance to the gym is at the rear of the building.

"We will have something for everyone," said Lora Jones, co-chair of the book sale committee. More than 30 genres will be represented at the book sale, including fiction, nonfiction, children's books, cookbooks, biography, romance, science fiction and more.

"It's a really friendly, well-organized sale, and everything is clearly marked by category, so it's easy to find what you're looking for," Jones stated. "You never know what you're going to find. I've had many people come up to me over the years and say, 'I was looking for this, and I can't believe I found it here.'"

Volunteers work year-round on Tuesday afternoons, sorting and packing books for the sale. Volunteer Joyce Hershey recalled that the book sale began in the late 1990s, when a group of library patrons wanted to form a Friends group.

This is the second year the sale will be held at Kraybill Mennonite School. "We owe a lot of credit to Kraybill for letting us use their gym," Jones remarked. "They have been very supportive of us and our book sale."

Along with books, food will be for sale, including hot dogs, barbecue and baked goods, as well as beverages. Admission to the event is free on Friday and Saturday, but Thursday's sale has an admission charge. "You'll get first pick if you come on Thursday, and you'll be supporting the library with your admission fee," Jones noted. Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted for payment, and volume buyers are encouraged to bring their own boxes or bags.

Kim Beach, operations coordinator, said the book sale is an important source of income for the library. "Fifty percent of the library's budget is covered by government funding, but the other 50% has to come from other sources, so we really rely on the Friends group and the book sale to support us and our mission," Beach stated. "This is our biggest fundraiser of the year."
