Calling all animal lovers

Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard, 790 Little Britain Road North, Quarryville, will host its annual Whiskers, Wags and Wine event on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The rain-or-shine fundraiser will include a variety of vendors, food trucks, prize drawings and live entertainment, and it will highlight multiple nonprofit organizations dedicated to animal advocacy.

Inside the venue, items such as clothing, baked goods, hard-cut meats, jewelry and pet accessories will be available to purchase from more than 20 vendors. Among other alcoholic beverages, a drink special will be offered at the bar on the second floor. A portion of the proceeds from the drink special will be donated to the nonprofits participating in the event.

Refreshments will be available to purchase from food trucks on the front lawn of the property, and prize drawings will be held throughout the day. The proceeds from food sales and prize drawing tickets will benefit several animal advocacy organizations, which will operate booths to offer information and collect donations. Attendees will also have an opportunity to meet rescued dogs at a doggy kissing booth during the fundraiser, and each of the dogs will be available to adopt.

A variety of the participating nonprofits serve the greater mid-Atlantic area, although organizations such as Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation and Woerth It Hollow are based in the Southern End. Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation, located in Millersville, specializes in the rehabilitation of small woodland creatures such as squirrels, rabbits and groundhogs. Woerth It Hollow operates a facility in Kirkwood to provide equine therapy services for individuals with disabilities while also rehabilitating injured or rescued horses. Leo's Helping Paws, Honey's RAID and Fund-A-Bull Bulldogs in Rescue are groups that seek to raise awareness of issues such as puppy mills and dog fighting, and each group raises funds for medical grants for abused or neglected animals. Other featured rescues will include Charlie's Crusaders Pet Rescue, Greenmore Farm Animal Rescue, Angie's Stray Foundation and Good Old Tails Senior Animal Rescue.

From Wednesday, Sept. 27, until the end of Whiskers, Wags and Wine, Britain Hill will accept donations of items from a wish list on its Facebook page. The list includes specific items that are needed the most by this year's supported animal advocates, such as collars, cleaning supplies, dog crates, unopened food and treats and gently used toys. Donations may be dropped off in the driveway of the vineyard, and they will be distributed to the nonprofits after the end of the fundraiser.

"This isn't just a community event. It's a call to action for animals," said Debbie Helm, owner of Britain Hill. "It's a great opportunity to bring your family, bring your dog and enjoy the day. Anything you buy will contribute in some way."

Helm created the fundraising event three years ago, inspired by her love for animals and her own rescued dogs. In addition to spreading awareness for animal-related issues and raising money for each organization, Helm said her goal is to assist their volunteers by donating essential items.
