Carnival will offer low-cost family fun

Don't underestimate the power of a penny. That's all it takes to have fun at the Summer Food and Fun Extravaganza Food Truck and Penny Carnival. The event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 5, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Water's Edge United Methodist Church, 471 Abel's Road, Wrightsville.

This is the third year for the event, which offers a variety of family fun, said Lisa Miller, outreach coordinator. "This year, we have some new games, and we're going to have a 22-foot slide from 3 Monkeys Inflatables," she shared. "We're also going to have a bubble machine, because kids love bubbles."

Charming Balloons will provide balloon artistry, and face painting by Funny Faces will also be offered. Fun-E-Faces will feature caricatures, and the Craley Fire Department will on hand with equipment for kids to explore.

Food options will include The Kilted Griller, Maine Course Mobile, Dandelion Thyme, Premium Shaved Ice and ice cream from the East Prospect Lions Club.

Children can participate in a penny pitch, and adults can try their hand at a dime pitch. A photo booth with props will be set up for people to take their own pictures, and carnival games will include mini golf, a duck pond and a bean bag toss.

"All children get a prize for winning or losing," Miller noted. "Nobody walks away empty-handed." Kids will be able to win tickets, which can be turned in for bigger prizes at a prize table, she said.

Everybody who comes to the carnival will receive a drawstring backpack, Miller commented, adding, "They can put all of their prizes in that."

She noted that the church hosts the event to promote interaction with the community. "We like to reach out to the community and let them know we're here for any of their needs," she remarked. The church holds fundraisers throughout the year to keep the cost low for people who come to the carnival, selling chocolate eggs at Easter and holding a yard sale in the spring.

Miller noted that the carnival will also be an opportunity for members of the community to meet Laura Holtzapple, who became pastor at the church in July.

Water's Edge United Methodist Church holds worship services on Sundays at 8:30 a.m., followed by Sunday school for children and adults at 9:45 a.m. For more information, search for "Water's Edge United Methodist Church" on Facebook.
