Celebrate Groundhog Day with Mount Joy Minnie

Are you tired of winter yet? Or do you hope we have six more weeks of snow? Find out what Mount Joy Minnie predicts when the resident rodent offers her prognostication on Groundhog Day, Sunday, Feb. 2. The event will take place at the Rotary clock, located at the intersection of Marietta Avenue and East Main Street in Mount Joy, at 7 a.m.

Minnie (who, full disclosure, is a puppet) will be controlled by guest handler Jacob Ziegler of Berkshire Hathaway Homesale Realty. He'll be joined in the festivities by Greg Sallade of State Farm Insurance and Denny Brandt of Berkshire Hathaway Homesale Realty.

"This is my first time at this event, but I've heard it is fun," Ziegler said. "Mount Joy is a small community, but everyone is well-connected. Events like this keep it that way. It allows the community to come together."

The festivities will include doughnuts and coffee provided by Voyage Mount Joy and the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185. A crazy hat contest will be held during the event, with divisions for both children and adults. The Groundhog Day celebration is organized by the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce.

"Minnie will be summoned right around 7 a.m.," shared Sallade. "I will speak, giving a few quick thank yous and this year's 'Minnie's Proclamation.' Then, we will vote by applause for the (winners of the) crazy hats."

Keystone Lawn Company has sponsored the Groundhog Day festivities for eight years.

"The reason Keystone Lawn Company sponsors the event is it's a great pleasure to support the Mount Joy community, and with being in the landscape industry and the dull colors of winter, we look forward to Mount Joy Minnie and her hopes that spring is coming soon," said Christopher W. Neiles, president of the company. "If possible, we may try to influence her to think spring!"

Sallade hopes a crowd will come out to hear Minnie's prediction.

"It's a quick, fun event," he said. "Be a part of Mount Joy. Be the first to hear Minnie's proclamation. Mount Joy is a small community with great people. This is a fun tradition that someone started, and we want to keep it going!"
