Celebrate New Year's Eve With Family Fun

Ring in the new year at First Night Hallam/Hellam. The celebration will take place on Saturday, Dec. 31, at Hellam Fire Company, 163 E. Market St., beginning at 7 p.m.

Organizer Joyce Dusman noted that the pandemic has limited festivities in the past, but she and her committee are planning a big party this year. "My committee has been working diligently all year to monitor what is going on in our world - what might work and how we can provide an enjoyable evening for all," Dusman said. The event was canceled in 2020 and scaled back last year. "We took a hit due to COVID last year, but we gave it a good shot," she noted. "Those that came had a good time. Last year, we gave away over $2,000 worth of prizes and gift cards. But now that life is coming back into a normal pattern, we're ready to celebrate once again."

The entertainment lineup for the evening will include magician Tim Storey, followed by local artist Kerry White. "Kerry will vocalize and entertain us until we begin our dancing and fun with DJ Mike," Dusman remarked.

A variety of children's activities will be featured as well, including crafts, the opportunity to interact with critters from a local animal organization and caricatures from artist Steve Royer.

Across the street, Trinity United Church of Christ will host bingo. The church is located at 200 E. Market St., Hallam.

The festivities will culminate in the dropping of a giant shoe at midnight, constructed to honor Hallam's famous Haines Shoe House.

"Everything is free, and the only thing you would need your pocketbook for would be food, which will be sold by Himes Family Concession," Dusman shared, noting that tickets will also be for sale for a giveaway drawing. People are encouraged to bring cleaning supplies for Bell Socialization Services, a nonprofit organization based in York that offers mental health services, intellectual disability services and shelter services. Needed items include mops, brooms, rubber gloves, sponges, cleaners and empty spray bottles. "We want to fill our buckets with cleaning supplies," Dusman said. "For those who bring items to fill our buckets, you will receive a free ticket toward our drawing toward the end of the evening. We believe giving to those in need is the best reward anyone can get."
