Celtic band to open Honey Brook Concerts in the Park series

Across the Pond, described as "a Celtic band on high octane," will open the Honey Brook Borough Concerts in the Park series on Sunday, June 11, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The concert will be held in Honey Brook Borough Park, 71 Pequea Ave. (Route 10), Honey Brook. In lieu of an admission fee, nonperishable food donations will be accepted for the Honey Brook Food Pantry.

The band members, who hail from Adams, York and Berks counties, will perform for the fourth time as part of the concert series. The band's last performance in Honey Brook was in 2018. "The first year we played, in 2013, I had never heard of Honey Brook. But now Honey Brook is in the top of our list of places we want to return for repeat concerts," said band member Dan Diviney.

This will be the band's first concert with its new fiddle player, Charles Kadyk, a resident of Mohnton. "He plays both fiddle and viola," Diviney pointed out. "We will be playing an exciting set of tunes Charles introduced to the band that we call 'The Swinging Set.'"

Also new to the band is Molly Shortridge from York County, who plays the silver flute, Irish flute and alto flute, as well as a variety of low and high Irish whistles. "Molly and Charles will perform the most beautiful version of 'The Crested Hen' I've ever heard," said Diviney.

Diviney will play Irish whistles and the Irish drum called the bodhrán. Rounding out the band is Mike Morrison, who will lead the show on guitar and Native American flute. "Both Mike and I will sing lead vocals, and Molly and Charles will help out with backing vocals," said Diviney. "Molly may even try out a new song she has been working on."

The band's music ranges from slow love songs and ballads to fast jigs and reels. "We will perform music from Ireland and Scotland, as well as a few pieces of Appalachian mountain music, influenced by the Scots-Irish who settled there centuries ago," Diviney noted.

He said that the band members particularly enjoy playing outdoors and encourage audience participation. "It is the perfect setting for a concert. You see people of all ages tapping their feet, clapping and intently listening to the music," Diviney stated. "And there are always some people who get up and dance along. That makes our day."

He added that those who enjoy Celtic music as well as those not familiar with the genre will enjoy the upcoming concert. "This is a way for area Celtic music lovers - and those who don't know yet that they love the music - to come on out and enjoy this music," Diviney shared. "Bring along your friends and family to enjoy the 'craic,' which is Irish for an 'enjoyable social activity; a good time.'"

The band will have two CDs available at the concert, including "Little Beggarman," recorded in 2019. For more information, visit http://www.acrossthepondmusic.com.
