Cheer competition planned at Donegal

The Donegal cheer program will host its inaugural cheer competition at the high school on Saturday, Oct. 21. Doors will open at 8 a.m., and the community is welcome to attend to see local teams perform. There is an admission fee, with a discount for students and seniors.

The varsity cheer team - made up of 14 athletes - is coached by Kellye Herbert, former coach of the junior high cheer team, and the varsity football team is coached by Anthony Sottasante; both are new to their positions. The two coaches have sought to bond the football and cheer programs, encourage those involved to support each other and create a family spirit.

The Donegal school board recently unanimously voted the varsity cheer squad into PIAA competitive spirit. This decision means that in addition to cheering at football, soccer, basketball and wrestling events, the cheer squad will participate in competitions, including PIAA districts and potentially states.

The team continues to participate in community service, and it has already organized a food drive for food-insecure families in the community.
