Christmas light displays open through Dec. 30

There is still a chance for local residents to view Lights on Elwyn, a free holiday display featured at the home of Ron and Kerin DeCarlo. The display opened on Dec. 2, and it will be lit - weather permitting - from 6 to 9 p.m. through Saturday, Dec. 30.

This is the 38th season for the display, which is created by the DeCarlos, with the help of Tim Gaston. The display is free, but donations are accepted for the Animal Rescue League of Berks County (ARL) in Birdsboro. Pet food, kitty litter and other supplies are also accepted at the holiday attraction. Readers may visit http://www.berksarl.org/wishlist-2 to view ARL's needed items.

Lights on Elwyn features approximately 30,000 Christmas lights, a walk-through Candy Cane Lane, an 11-foot Ferris wheel and animated characters. "The display is even bigger and better this year with more lights, new displays and different things to see," said Ron, noting that there is also a full-size hand-built sleigh where visitors may sit for a photo opportunity.

People are welcome to park, walk around the property and stroll through Candy Cane Lane.

For more information and directions, search for "Lights on Elwyn" on Facebook. In the event of inclement weather, information about the display will be posted on Facebook.

Another holiday display that will remain open through Dec. 30 is Holiday Lights at Gring's Mill. As part of the event, thousands of lights are placed on the trees, the historic buildings and throughout the Gring's Mill Recreation Area, located at 2083 Tulpehocken Road, Reading, across from the Penn State Berks campus. The event will be open on Thursday, Dec. 28; Friday, Dec. 29; and Dec. 30 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. each evening. Admission and parking are free.

In addition to strolling through the walk-through light display, visitors can enjoy food and beverages from local food trucks, warm up next to the fire pit and listen to live music in the outdoor pavilion. Music is offered from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m. each night. The following performers will be featured: Dec. 28, Wendy Thompson, harpist; Dec. 29, The Maggie Spike Trio with Tom Montgomery; and Dec. 30, Jeff Alfiero.

A separate building on the bridge, a former generating station that spans the Tulpehocken Creek, houses a Christmas train display.
