Church Plans Anniversary Worship Service

Old Zion German Reformed Church, 187 Reifsnyder Road, Lititz (Brickerville), will conduct its anniversary worship service on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 3 p.m. The event provides an opportunity to reflect on the church's rich history.

This year's theme will be "Old Zion During the Revolution." During the Revolutionary War, Old Zion, then known as Reyer's German Reformed Church, served as a hospital for wounded soldiers following the Battle of Brandywine and the Philadelphia campaigns of 1777 to 1778. Revolutionary War veterans are believed to be buried in the cemetery.

The Rev. William LaSalle will give the sermon, playing the part of the Rev. John Christopher Gobrecht, the pastor at Old Zion from 1770 to 1779. The worship service will include music and hymns from the period presented by vocal soloist Amanda Mrenna, music director at Bethany United Church of Christ in Ephrata, and organist JP Welliver, music director at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Penryn. Gary Meyers of the German Battalion and other Revolutionary War re-enactors will be present to offer a display of Revolutionary War equipment that soldiers might have carried during the war.

Consistent with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), masks are optional but are encouraged while indoors at Old Zion events.
