Church to offer community meals, food assistance

First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, 101 S. Decatur St., Strasburg, offers ministries for the community.

The church offers a community meal on Fridays at 6 p.m. in the fellowship hall. The event is open to the public.

Additionally, since 2012, the church has operated a food pantry to help people in need in its community and surrounding areas. Over the years, the pantry has grown, last year distributing more than 1,000 bags of groceries and serving more than 100 families.

When an individual first visits the pantry, a short intake form is completed to determine the amount of food they can obtain based on household size. People may receive resources every other week from 2 to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays.

The pantry offers a variety of shelf-stable provisions. Milk, eggs, bread, butter, and fresh meat are offered when the budget allows. The pantry operates on the client choice model wherein clients may choose the items that best meet their family's dietary needs. Some of the most requested items are canned pasta, such as ravioli and SpaghettiOs; canned meats like tuna, chicken, and Spam; and meal helpers such as beef and tuna.

In addition, the pantry provides information on other resources in the county, as well as Bibles and devotionals.

The ministry is run by 10 committee members and 12 volunteers. Wesley United Methodist Church (UMC) has also provided support for the ministry.
