Church to present The Knotwork Band, square dance

The Knotwork Band will perform Celtic folk music from Ireland, Scotland, England and Brittany when it takes the stage at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16, in the sanctuary at Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey.

The concert is part of the church's 2024-25 Arts Alive cultural series. A freewill offering will be received. Handicapped parking and an elevator are available.

The central Pennsylvania trio of Kevin Long, Tommy Kochel and Victoria Visceglia will play a wide spectrum of musical styles ranging from airs and waltzes to jigs and reels. The band uses a variety of instrumentation, including silver flute, high and low whistles, wooden flute, piccolo, guitar, resophonic mandolin, hardanger mandolin, banjo mandolin, cittern, bodhrans and bones, as well as vocals. The band's music has the strong influence of such modern groups as The House Band, Lunasa, Old Blind Dogs and Silly Wizard.

The Arts Alive season will continue at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, with a concert by the Mennonite Children's Choir of Lancaster.

Square dancing and homemade desserts will be the highlights at Derry Presbyterian Church's annual square dance, set for 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28. The event will be held in the church's fellowship hall. There is no charge to attend, and people of all ages are welcome.

The evening will include a variety of line and square dances, with a break halfway through to enjoy desserts brought by the participants. The best-dressed adult, boy and girl will be recognized.

Derry Presbyterian Church is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). Worship services are held on Sundays at 8 and 10:30 a.m. and on Tuesdays at 6 p.m.
